PPO Preferred Provider Organization gives a network of preferred healthcare providers. PPO plans give flexibility to select their own providers rather than being assigned one. You can choose an in-network provider or out of network and still be eligible for payment. PPO also has cost sharing like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. PPO is not specific to a certain demographic but is eligible from an employer, individual purchase, retirees from employer, COBRA. HMO Health Maintenance Organization requires you to choose a primary care provider within their network and would be your main source of healthcare. HMO plans focus on preventative care and tend to be less expensive over a PPO plan. HMO is available to employees, individual purchase, Medicaid Managed Care recipients, Medicare Advantage recipients, retirees, government
programs. Medicare Primarily for individuals over 65 or younger people with disabilities. There are four different plans; Part A: Hospital Insurance, Part B: Medical Insurance, Part C: Medicare Advantage Plans, Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage Age 65+, individuals under 65 w/ disabilities who receive Social Security Disability Insurance, individuals of any age w/ end- stage renal disease (ESRD) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) Medicaid A federally funded program that provides medical coverage for low-income individuals and families. Low-income individuals and families, pregnant women and children, individuals with disabilities, elderly in need of nursing home care. Cobra Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. Allows people who lose their job-based health insurance to continue their coverage for a period of 18-36 months. Individuals usually pay the full premium including the portion that was covered by the employer. Employees and their dependents who lose their job-based health coverage from job loss or reduction in work hours.
