Lesson 5 Questions Name:
Sara Khan 1.
Describe a scenario for each of the four precedence diagramming method (PDM) relationship types (different from the lesson commentary or your book). You must include two activities in your description (and specify which is the predecessor and which is the successor) and describe their relationship (see example below). Do not simply say "Activity A or B"; come up with real examples. Also, be sure to word the predecessor and successor as activities. See the example below. This example is very simple, but you need to provide enough of a description of the relationship to illustrate that you understand the concept. The instructor may not be familiar with your examples, so for something specific to your industry you need to provide enough detail in your description so that the instructor can evaluate your scenarios. Do not describe multiple activities when describing either the predecessor or successor. Be specific. Example for Finish-to-Start: Predecessor activity: Bake birthday cake Successor activity: Decorate birthday cake Description of relationship: As soon as the
predecessor task
(Bake the birthday cake) finishes the successor task (decorate the birthday cake) can start. Only use 2 activities in your example: 1 predecessor and 1 successor.
a)
Finish-to-Start •
Predecessor
activity: Build a 3D model of a glider •
Successor activity:
Perform Finite Element Analysis on The Glider •
Description of relationship:
According to the definition of predecessor and successor activities, a successor activity can only start after the predecessor activity is finished. In this case, for this activity the 3D would be built first using an AutoCAD software after it is done, the model's strength would be tested and analyzed using finite element analysis. b)
Start-to-Start
•
Predecessor activity:
Wind tunnel Testing •
Successor activity:
Data Collection •
Description of relationship:
According to the method of start to start a successor can only start when the predecessor starts. In this example data for flight test that can be used for further analysis can only be collected when the wind tunnel testing starts. c)
Finish-to-Finish (come up with an example where the starts are not dependent, but the finish of one depends on the finish of the other)
•
Predecessor
activity:
Replacing Avionics components in an RC airplane •
Successor activity:
Mono coating The Airplane •
Description of relationship:
In this method the successor cannot finish until the predecessor ends. In this case we can replace the avionics components as needed while still mono coating the airplane However the overall monocoat cannot be finished before all the components are replaced as needed, since the bay doors of the fuselage holding the components must also be mono coated. d)
Start-to-Finish •
Predecessor activity:
New Website Launch •
Successor activity:
Getting rid of the old website •
Description of relationship:
According to this Method the successor cannot finish until the predecessor starts. Launching the a new website and getting rid of the old one will only work when the new website is up and successfully running.
