1 Assignment 3.2 Quantitative Research Evaluation Bin Yan College of Aeronautics, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University ASCI 693 Current Research Prob in Avia/Aero Dr. Denny Lessard October 29, 2022
2 Quantitative Research Evaluation The article is a quantitative model of aviation safety. The researcher wanted to develop an analytical method to examine data of accidents and safety indicators in an effort to quantify the risk caused by human error. (Shyur, 2008). This is a fascinating study which reviews risk assessments in aviation and collects data to develop a more analytical examination of risk assessment. The researcher noted in the article that in the past only accident or fatality data were investigated to be used as a measure of risk however, airspace industries are complex and therefore should include may other factors while investigating potential risks for assessment. (Shyur, 2008).
3 1. What is the APA formatted reference for this article? Shyur, H., 2008. A quantitative model for aviation safety risk assessment. Computers &Industrial Engineering, 54(1), pp.34-44. 2. What is the article about? Summarize the article in one to two paragraphs. The third and final article for review in this assignment is an article written by one researcher who desired to develop an analytical method for data to quantify aviation risk as it is associated with human risk factors. The model that the author of the study proposes, and further details is one that allows investigation of non-linear effects of aviation safety factors and flexible assessment of risk. (Shyur, 2008). The authors does this through a statistical comparison of two other risk assessment procedures in which the first looks at the number of accidents and fatalities as an indicator of safety while the other method follows the Poisson Process, of which both are reactive in nature. The researchers proposed method is more proactive in nature taking into account human and organizational factors that influence risk assessment. 3. What is the research problem statement (if possible, use direct quote with APA formatted citation)? To what extent does the problem statement communicate the research problem to the reader? The research problem in the third article is that the aviation safety culture revolves are reactive risk assessments and using incidents to determine the current safety environment. The researcher indicates that a more accurate account of aviation safety is not based upon incidents and accidents but upon human factors and organization safety cultures prior to an event
