Chi-Square Test Amanda McMartin Capella University SWK 5015 February 19, 2023
Chi-Square Test 1 Before integrating a new intervention aimed at decreasing child abuse, Redmond Child Protective Services wants to ensure that the increased cost needed to implement the new program is justified. A chi-square test was conducted to determine if a relationship occurred between the type of intervention and the outcomes. The sample size consisted of 95 cases, of these cases 50 participants received parenting classes and 45 participants received family therapy. The facilitator wanted to determine whether or not there was suspected abuse or neglect from the parents one year after completing the services. Based on the data collected, family therapy was a better option for reducing suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. Following the ten-week intervention, 9.5% of individuals who completed family therapy had an active case for possible abuse or neglect, compared to 25.3% who received the parenting classes. When totals were compared, the breakdown for suspicion of abuse consisted of 47.4% of individuals who completed family therapy and 52.6% who completed parenting classes. Moreover, the test confirms that a correlation does exist and that the findings are not likely to be correlated by chance. This is seen in that the significance 2-sided is .004. As such the null hypothesis can be rejected as the calculation is significantly smaller than .05.. Redmond Child Protective Services should advocate for the local government to invest in family therapy sessions since the results show a significant difference in outcomes in family therapy rather than parenting classes. While the analysis seemed to suggest that family therapy was a more helpful intervention for deterring abuse, additional research should be conducted. The sample size used consisted of only 95 cases, this is not a substantial quantity of participants to finalize the effectiveness of the program. Another shortcoming of the study was that demographic information was not included in the analysis. This may impact results if the family
Chi-Square Test 2 comes from a culture where therapy is stigmatized. As such, they may not do well with this type of intervention. The program may benefit from a pretest and posttest study as well, to see how parents have improved after having taken the classes. Results from the study can be used to make informed changes and decisions for the program moving forward.
