Identify and Measure Material Quantities
Written Assessment Task 1
11 Mar 2021
Project: Proposed House at West Hoxton
Task: using the plan supplied of a typical slab on ground single storey brick veneer
residential cottage, complete the questions below.
This assessment is to be done using P10 quantity surveying paper.
Question:
Calculate the net (deduct openings) quantities required for each of the 3 categories
below
All answers are to include the appropriate measurement units, eg: m, m
2
etc
1. Brickwork
*
brick dimension 230x110x76; 50 bricks per square meter
i.
110mm skins of face brickwork to the house
1. South elevation: height 2440-260=2180; width 5390;
bedroom brick area=2.18x5.39=11.75m
2
,extra area:width 2400,
W5 area=1.78m
2
,brick for extra area=2.4x2.18-1.78=3.45 m
2
,
total south brick area = 11.75+3.45=
15.20m
2
2. North elevation: total area=7.79x2.18=16.98m
2
; W2+W3+W4=
9.16m
2
, brick area = 16.98-9.16=
7.82 m
2
3. East elevation: width 8990; total area = 8.99 x 2.18=19.60m
2
;
W1=0.72m
2
; brick area = 19.6-0.72=
18.88m
2
4. West elevation: width 4190+4800=8990, total area =
8.99x2.18=19.6m
2
, D2 area = 1.93m
2
, W6 area = 5.54m
2
, brick
area = 19.6-1.93-5.54=
12.13m
2
5. Total area: 15.2+7.82+18.88+12.13 = 54.03m
2
; taking 50
bricks/m
2
; roughly need 54.03x50=2701 bricks
6. Extra 2 brick course for rebate edge beam: perimeter =
(2x7790)+(2x8990)=33.56m, brick length 0.23/brick, therefore
number required roughly = 33.56/0.23=146 bricks, 2 course ~
292 bricks for rebate
7. Total bricks for the house roughly: 2701 + 292 = 2993 bricks

ii.
230mm solid brick wall to the carport
1. Carport wall length 5990, height same as house = 2440-
260=2180, wall area = 13.05m
2
, 50 bricks/m
2
therefore bricks
required = 13.05x50=652 bricks; double brick ~ 1304 bricks
2. Concrete
i.
Concrete to the house slab only (exclude patio and concrete path)
1. Edge beam Rebate 160, slab thickness 100, house slab has 2
sections from south to north
2. Gross area = (7790-320)x(8990-320) = 64.76m
2
3. Deduct area = 2400x4800=11.52m
2
4. Total house slab area = 53.24m
2
5. Volume of concreate = 53.24 x 0.1=
5.323m
3
ii.
Concrete to the house footing beams
1. Edge beam width 300, height for main edge beam 240; hight
difference for edge beam and slab = 160-100=60; width
difference for edge beam and rebate = 300-160 = 140.
2. Perimeter for edge beam = (7790x2)+(8990x2) = 33.56m
3. Area edge beam major = 300 x 240 = 0.072m
2
4. Area edge beam minor = 60 x 140 = 0.0084m
2
5. Total edge beam area = 0.0804m
2
6. Volume of edge beam = 0.0804 x 33.56 = 2.79m
3
iii.
Concrete to the carport slab
1. Carport length 5990, width 3350, double brick rebate on 1 side
only 230, thickness 100, carport area = 5990 x (3350) = 20.07m
2
2. Volume of concreate for carport slab = 20.07 x 0.1 = 2.007m
3
iv.
Concrete to the carport footing
1. Footing only for the double brick rebate on 1 side of wall, width
300, height 400, length 5990
2. Volume of concrete for carport footing = 300x400x5990 =
0.719m
3
v.
Concrete to the Patio
1. Patio area length 1500, width 1170, step down 150 to concrete
path, patio thickness 250, concrete path thickness 100
2. Patio Gross Area= 1500 x 1170 = 1.755m
2
3. Patio Gross Volume = 1.755 x 250 =
0.438m
3
4. Concreate path area = 1170 x 2650 = 3.1m
2
5. Concreate Path Volume = 3.1x0.1 = 0.31m
3
6. Concreate to Patio and path = 0.438+0.31 =
0.748m

3. Reinforcement
i.
SL72 Reinforcing Mesh
* area of SL72 is 6x2.4=14.4m
2
, Used in house slab, carport slab, patio
slab (overlap 150 at step down), concrete path slab.
1. Concreate path slab area = 1170 x 2650 = 3.1m
2
2. Based on calculations from above total area = House slab (53.25
m
2
) + carport slab (20.07 m
2
) + patio area (1.755 m
2
) + stepdown
overlap area (150x2x1170) + concreate path (3.1 m
2
) = 78.21m
2
3. Number of SL72 mesh needed = 78.21/14.4=5.36 or
6
mesh
ii.
N16 Reinforcing bars
* assume bar length 6m, used in footings of house edge beam (3
bottom), carport wall edge beam (top and bottom 3 each), the gap left
is 50, NO OVERLAPS
1. Perimeter of house = (7790-100)x2+(8990-100)x2 = 33.16m
2. N16 bars required = 3 x (33.16/6) =16.58 or
17
3. Length of carport wall edge beam 5990-100 = 5.89m
4. N16 bars required = 6 x (5.89/6) = 5.89 or 6
iii.
How many stirrups
*stirrups assume R6 at 500 cts, assume 1 stirrup is used every 500 for
both bottom bars only as well as top & bottom bars.
1. Stirrup For perimeter of house edge beam from above = 33.16/0.5
= 66.32 or
67
2. Stirrup for carport edge beam from above = 5.89/0.5 = 11.8 or
12
