RUNNING TITLE: ChatGPT in Digital Forensics
ChatGPT has made the lives of its users easier with its ability to generate solutions to
questions it is prompted with based on its training. The article I found was written by Cornell
University professors on the emergence of the usage of GPT-4 in digital forensic cases, and
whether the usage of AI is having a positive or negative impact on the field. GPT-4 is a large
multimodal model (LLM), which can use both images and text as inputs to create a response.
LLM’s are built using neural networks, like the function of the human brain. In the field, GPT-4
has been used for data identification and classification. GPT-4 is still unable to completely
perform an investigation and find evidence on its own. The authors of the paper have been
conducting experiments using GPT-4 in various areas of digital forensics. These areas included
artifact identification, the ability to train a beginner in digital forensics, programming, and
incident response.
GPT-4 can assist a digital forensic investigator find a file that has been downloaded or
executed on a machine running Windows 10 OS. It currently does not have the capabilities to
perform this task for itself but can suggest steps that the investigator take to find the file they are
looking for. It provides suggestions for investigators on where to look on drives, how to search
metadata, how to see browser history, and check registry and event logs. With this however,
some of the data that was generated by GPT-4 was blatantly incorrect or missing important
information and would have resulted in a failed investigation or tainted evidence. Along with
being able to suggest steps that an investigator takes in a digital forensic investigation, GPT-4
can provide a general understanding of forensics and explain basic procedures that go along with
a forensic investigation. It was also able to generate exercises and practices that a person who
was studying this topic should perform to improve their understanding of the tools that they are
using to access this data. However, just like in its description of identifying files on a Windows
10 OS device, its generated responses were sometimes surface level.
GPT-4 was best at utilizing the programming aspect of digital forensics. It was able to
generate working scripts for common digital forensics task like disk acquisition and utilizing
Linux commands to
