A digital business model for hospitals may include: Computational science and machine learning – artificial intelligence can be utilized for visual detection of diseases in certain fields such as radiology, dermatology, and pathology (Kim & Song, 2022). Electronic capturing – electronic health records can aid with diagnostic, admission, and discharge decisions. Analytics can also be used for staffing hospitals. Algorithms can be used to help predict staffing needs and reduce hospital costs. Supply chain management – improving inventory management by automating supply orders can reduce both stockout and operation cost. A digital business model allows hospitals to modify processes and patient experiences. Critical components of the business model hospitals should consider are its primary customers, infrastructure, and financial viability. For example, if the hospital’s patients are primarily seniors, then investing in electronic health record systems may be more valuable than systems that predict staffing needs. If hospitals were to ask patients to monitor their condition through an app, this would primarily focus on the CRM activities related to enhancing relationships and retaining customers (Wiley, 2020). Patients would have a more active role in their care which would enhance the relationship with their care provider. Additionally, if the customer enjoys the use of the app, then it increases patient retention rate. References: Pearlson, K. E., Saunders, C. S., & Galletta, D. F. (2020). Harvard Business Review. https://hbr.org/2022/01/how-digital- transformation-can-improve-hospitals-operational-decisions Hi Brandon, You mentioned that telehealth appointments offer a larger scale of services to patients. Although this is a benefit, I think there are some downsides to consider as well, including: Costly equipment/systems integrations No physical interaction Security concerns
Telehealth appointments also do not have the capability to accommodate laboratory exams or physical exams (National Library of Medicine, 2021) which means there is limited opportunity to obtain new customers. Obtaining customers is a key part of the customer relationship management process (Wiley, 2020), and in general, key to the business model. It is also important to take into consideration not just physical health, but mental health as well. Telehealth appointments may provide different benefits across different fields. Thanks, Molly References: Pearlson, K. E., Saunders, C. S., & Galletta, D. F. (2020). Managing and using information systems: A strategic approach (7th ed.). Wiley.
