CUIN MODULE 1
ASSIGNMENT 1C- VERTICAL ALIGNMENT OF THE TEKS
Assignment Directions:
●
Select a different Knowledge and Skills statement and one accompanying readiness student
expectation for your content area/grade level.
●
Find and list a vertically aligned,
prior year Knowledge and Skills statement and readiness
accompanying Student Expectation.
●
Find and list the vertically aligned,
upcoming year Knowledge and Skill statement and readiness
accompanying student expectation.
●
Commentary:
o
Outline the similarities and differences between the prior year, current year, and future
year TEKS.
o
Explain how the standards build and increase in rigor over the years.
o
Explain how knowing this information can help you in lesson planning.
Subject/Grade Level/Course: 3rd Grade Math
Grade TEKS and SE:
3.2 Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent and compare whole numbers and
understand relationships related to place value.
3.2 (D) Compare and order whole numbers up to 100,000 and represent comparisons using the symbols >, <, or =
Prior Year TEKS and SE:
2.2 Number and Operations. The students apply mathematical process standards to understand how to represent and compare
whole numbers, the relative position and magnitude of whole numbers, and relationships within the numeration system related
to place value.
2.2 (B) Use standard, word, and expanded forms to represent numbers up to 1,200
Upcoming Year TEKS and SE:
4.2 Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent, compare, and order whole
numbers and decimals and understand relationships related to place value.
4.4 (A) Add and subtract whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths place using the standard algorithm.
Commentary:
I chose to focus on 3rd grade Math TEKS and SE related to number and operations specially around whole numbers and
decimals. I was looking at the three different grades levels, I notice that each TEKS was a little bit different. The SE was the same.
However, in 3
rd
grade students are expected to apply mathematical process standards to represent and compare whole numbers
and understand the relationship related to place value. This helps me to see the students need to know whole numbers and
decimals. Students need to learn about all of this because it will help them in the real world when I come to decimal and whole
numbers.
The difference between 2
nd
and 3
rd
is the students are learning typical the same but in different concepts.
It is not a
big difference between these two levels, it just to recall and understand better the concepts. In 4
th
grade, they go even more into
depth of decimal and whole numbers and real numbers. The TEKS and SE and helping each other out while going more into deep
of each other throughout each year. Overall understanding and skills are the same.
