Explain the differences between the US standard system, SI, and metric systems used for measuring
ingredients.
The only difference between the US standard system and imperial systems is in the volume
measurements. In the imperial system, the number of ounces in pints, quarts, and gallons are larger.
The
type of units used in the US and imperial systems are weight (pound and ounces) and volume (gallon,
quart, pint, cup, fluid ounce, tablespoon, and teaspoon) (BC Cook Articulation Committee, 2015). The
metric system and SI are also similar, but there are more units to the SI. The metric units are length
(meter), mass (gram), and volume (liter). SI units are length (meter), mass (kilogram), temperature
(kelvin), time (second), amount of substance (mole), electric current (ampere), and luminous intensity
(lumen) (Southeastern Louisiana University, 2008).
Describe the appropriate technique for measuring flour for your cookie recipe.
The appropriate way to measure flour is by weighing it. The dry measuring cup is placed on the scale first
to zero it out. This is done so that the weight of the measuring cup is not included with the flour's
weight. Stir the flour to loosen it up if it has been sitting in the bag for a while. The flour then needs to
be lightly spooned into a dry measuring cup. This step is not done over the mixing bowl containing the
other ingredients. It is critical that the flour is not packed into the cup or shaken. The flour is then
spooned into the cup until there is a mound of flour over the top. Next, the flour is scraped off using a
butter knife until level with the measuring cup. Once the flour is level, it should be weighed; the weight
of one cup of flour is 125 grams (Larsen, 2020).
What errors in the product could happen if the flour is not measured accurately with the appropriate
technique using dry measure cups?
If flour is not measured correctly with the proper techniques using dry measure cups, too much flour
could be added to the recipe. If there is too much flour, the cookies will be tough and dry (Larsen, 2020).
If there is not enough flour, the cookies will spread. It is essential to measure flour in a dry measure cup
to get an exact amount; flour cannot be leveled out if poured into a liquid measure cup (Lawandi, 2020).
Explain why it is important to sift flour before measuring in a dry measure cup.
Sifting flour before measuring is important because it aerates the flour and breaks up any lumps. When
flour is sifted, it is lighter and makes it easier to mix with other ingredients (Gallary, 2014).
Explain the technique for measuring dry ingredients using measuring spoons.
Measuring dry ingredients using measuring spoons is similar to using dry measure cups. The ingredient
should be heaped into the spoon over a surface and not the mixing bowl. Next, using a butter knife, level
off the ingredient to the spoon's rim (Taste of Home Editors, 2020).
Why is using a liquid measuring cup for measuring liquid ingredients important?
When measuring liquids, it is important to use liquid measuring cups to get the correct amount. If a dry
measure cup is used for liquid, there is a possibility of the liquid spilling out. This will result in less of the
amount needed for the recipe.
What ingredients could be measure with a food scale? In what situation with cooking is a food scale
commonly used?
Dry ingredients are measured with a food scale. Some examples are flour, sugar, nuts, and butter. Food
scales are commonly used when a person is baking foods like cakes, cookies, brownies, or pies.
Why is it important to select a measuring tool close to the amount needed for a recipe?
To be more accurate and precise, the measuring tool needs to be as close to the amount required for the
recipe as possible. If the measured ingredients are not accurate, the chemical reactions that occur while
baking may not happen (Lawandi, 2020).
When one is measuring any ingredients should one measure over the bowl that contains all the other
ingredients? Explain your answer.
Ingredients should never be measured over the bowl that contains other ingredients because there is a
risk of having too much of that ingredient added. For example, a person is pouring salt into a teaspoon
over the bowl; the salt is spilling into the bowl as well. Too much salt is being added to the recipe, and
the product will taste different.
