Explain when facilitating goods would be important to a company’s operations. Give an example of two types of facilitating goods. To summarize, facilitating goods are elements that are basically consumed by a customer when a particular service is provided. It is important to a company’s operations when they are mainly based on providing a service. This means that they need these goods such as office supplies for a bank or medical supplies for a hospital to continue to function at an efficient rate. Two examples of facilitating goods that were not mentioned previously could be the kitchen utensils used in a restaurant or the cash needed in a bank. 3. How can a poor reverse logistics impact a company’s operations? Poor reverse logistics can impact a company because it can lead to a lack or training in procedures, put products in danger of being returned, create an issue with the flow of information systems, and can even impact how a customer base of a company views their brand as a whole which can affect sales in the future. 4. In the service industry do all customers receive the same quality of service? Explain. 5. How does a cross-docking warehouse make the shipping process more efficient? Cross-Docking shipping as a whole involves unloading materials from one truck and loading it immediately into a truck leaving to the next destination. This reduces time and requires minimum storage within a warehouse. It makes the process more efficient because material now doesn’t need to be stored all the time, it can be moved when received. This improves operations and inventory capacity. 6. Without increasing employee hiring costs, what steps can be taken to increase service capacity when demand exceeds capacity?
Instead of hiring new employees, some steps that can be taken are to use part-time employees as done in the holiday seasons, use technology to make work easier, and some service companies can even cross-train their employs to work on multiple tasks when busy. 7. What kind of activities take place in a foreign trade zone? An FTZ is considered to be a physical area in the US that is outside of the country’s territory. Within the FTZ, merchandise can be freely moved as long as it doesn’t interfere US or State laws. Inside here operations like manufacturing, assembling, and storage can take place. There are sales taking place as well and there is even no limit on the amount of time these items can stay inside the FTZ. 8. Explain two reasons why a company would choose not to operate their supply chain globally. Although there are many reasons why a company would not want to operate globally, two key ones that stick out are the Tax/Incentives and Environmental Issues. In regard to taxes and incentives, you must always consider the government that would be running the area you go to as well as keeping in mind the tariffs that are placed on your company. On the other side, many companies are hesitant in regard to environmental issues like global warming and pollution and would not want to be a part of an area that allows for such things to happen. 9. The 7 R’s are related to which type of supply chain capabilities, and what do they measure? The 7 R’s are related to managing the customer service capabilities within the service industry. They are geared toward meeting each of the seven r’s which are: - The right product - The right quality - The right quantity - The right place - The right time - The right customer - The right costs 10. Describe an advantage and disadvantage of Train, Air, and Pipeline Transportation modes. Train: It is able to carry very heavy products or items in bulk. However, it slow and inflexible.
