You are hired as a product development engineer in Acme Mining, a company that designs and manufactures various types of mining equipment and mining vehicles in Australia. During a design review meeting, your manager told you to ignore a certain section in the Australian Design Rules because she believes not all engineering standards are mandatory. However, a senior engineer in the company disagrees and argues that all Australian Design Rules are mandatory and must be complied with. a) Are all Australian Design Rules mandatory? Explain your statement. (4 marks) b) Regardless of your answer to a), list at least three (3) ways in which engineering companies and/or engineers can benefit from complying with various engineering standards. (6 marks) Answers: 1a) Australian Design Rules are mandatory for a company that designs and manufactures mining equipment and mining vehicles in Australia. The standards are mandatory for vehicles that are registered on use on Australian roads and the help ensure that mining vehicles are safe and road worthy. However, the Australian Design Rules require “All new road vehicles manufactured in Australia and imported new or second-hand vehicles, must comply with the relevant ADRs when they are first supplied to the Australian market.” From the Department of Infrastructure, Australian Government, so it all designs no the ADR is not mandatory but in the case of vehicles on the road yes it is mandatory. 1b) Firstly, by complying with the engineering standards it makes the product or design safer to use and safer to manufacture and produce. Additionally, it would help with practicality as a lot of engineering standards are put in place as to make sure the product isn’t destroyed in manufacturing or use. Thirdly, it can make the procedures standardized which will then be easier to train new people on the manufacturing and use it could also minimise the number of manual tasks to be completed. It also brings reliability and efficiency to the product and the manufacturing.
