Which learning module did you complete? Describing Distributions
Attach your (handwritten) homework to the end of this document. Check you work against the given answers. What was your biggest learning or aha! from this module? Explain. My biggest learning from this module was the importance at looking at the various frequencies
in our data and how this gives us multiple data points. What is still confusing or was difficult about the
learning in this module? Explain. Something that was difficult was transferring the information we gathered into a histogram. The toughest part of that was making sure you were recording the data accurately. What can you apply from this module to your classroom? Be specific and draw from the standards. (This response should be fairly lengthy, e.g., 500 words). In this module, I can apply the way that Professor Kader introduced the ideas of representing data using different types of graphs. The teachers had been using a line plot up to this point in each activity. This type of graph is important as a way to identify patterns. Since they weren’t looking for a pattern in their information due to it be so skewed, he introduced them to the stem and leaf chart as another way to represent the data. He talked to them about what exactly each part means in the stem and leaf plot.
I feel like this is an important thing that I can apply to my classroom as well. Helping my students to represent the data they gather in multiple forms. In 3
rd
grade specifically we focus on dot plots, bar graphs, frequency tables, and pictographs. When doing the hat activity teachers were introduced to using a histogram to help them see
a range of data and be able to identify sources of
variations. Once they’d learned how to create a histogram they were able to incorporate their 1

findings on a wider scale using technology with multiple data points. With the use of technology, the teachers were better able to answer the questions they were raising. Incorporating the use of technology in the classroom is something that I would like to try more of. I have my students create various graphs by hand, but using technology can allow for more freedom on the types of graphs they can use and the amount of data they can collect. I’ve shown them how to create tables in an excel spreadsheet to create a graph using data they collected for their science experiments, but I haven’t incorporated into math. Also, being able to see how all this information translates into a real-world setting was something that was very interesting to see from the company New Balance. You hear about marketing and projections all the time, but aren’t sure how that data is collected and analyzed. Now, I have a better understanding of how they gather their data to generate ideas for products. As a way to incorporate this into my classroom it would be fun to have them create a business, gather data, and create a graph/table/chart to represent their data set. 2
