ABS 415 WK 3 DIS 2 Sadly, an elementary school here in Texas underwent a mass shooting back in March 2022. In Uvalde, Texas, on May 24, 2022, a former student named Salvador Ramos, then 18 years old, opened fire on 19 pupils and two instructors, killing them all. Another 17 people were hurt but managed to escape the Robb Elementary School incident. Ramos drove to the school and entered after shooting and seriously wounding his grandmother at their house earlier that day. He spent more than an hour in an adjacent classroom before being shot and killed by members of the US Border Patrol Tactical Unit. During that time, he avoided multiple local and state officers who had been in the school's hallways for more than an hour. The unforgettable crisis resulted in many being victims of this violence for the rest of their lives. One of the teachers who got involved to try to protect the students lost her life and left behind a husband and four children. Tragically, her husband died shortly after due to a heart attack. Not only did this crisis affect the students, staff, and parents but the community as a whole. There will always be crises that we must learn to deal with, therefore we will never return to normal. He said that since the rapids will only increase faster, we must learn to navigate our boat through them. According to him, this does not imply that there won't be times of calm and quiet when we can take a break and catch our breath, but it does imply that there will always be crises since life is unpredictable. There are two phases: the adaptation stage and the crisis or emergency stage. People must apply their knowledge, including emergency preparedness, during the disaster phase. During an emergency, we make use of our prepared actions. The primary objectives of the emergency stage are to stabilize and to give time. Regarding the adaptive phase, it is contingent upon the outcome of the emergency phase. In order for this plan to succeed, individuals need to look for their relationships and themselves. There will always be crises, therefore people should prepare for the long haul, just like a marathon runner would. For a leader, skills are also necessary for this approach to be successful (N.A., 2009). Just like the podcast emphasized, being prepared for crises is essential. Anticipate, get ready, and practice is crucial. It is imperative that businesses own a crisis response plan. Although the police department, in my opinion, failed the school, the schools do have active shooter preparations. When a crisis arises, it is crucial for the company's representatives to acknowledge their error and reassure the public that they will take all necessary precautions to guarantee that it doesn't happen again.
Those who practice adaptive leadership are more able to adjust to changing circumstances and prosper as a result. Adaptive leaders restructure departments, reinterpret job descriptions, and alter fundamental game rules during times of crisis. In response to this crisis, using the six components that enable strategic conversations would be to have Following a crisis of this size, open communication between all departments will be beneficial in fostering confidence between employees and leadership and in generating ideas for future policy changes that will benefit the organization as a whole. A leader can have a deeper understanding of the feelings of all staff members following this occurrence by actively listening to their comments. It will be helpful to have frank conversations with people about how they are feeling and what you can do to support them in light of this catastrophe. Maintaining integrity and being transparent in all discussions about how to follow this tragedy will contribute to building organizational trust in the leadership. Have meaningful back-and-forth talks that help everyone understand one other's points of view, rather than approaching the circumstances as meetings. It can be possible to change some of the perspectives by sharing tales of tactics employed by other businesses that have gone through similar terrible experiences. To improve workplace security, I would collaborate closely with law enforcement and security specialists. This could entail putting in place security guards, safety procedures, or, in extreme cases, temporarily moving the office. Naturally, based on the circumstances surrounding the murder in question and the facts as they stand. It's critical to openly communicate these safety precautions in order to comfort staff members. To ensure that I stay calm in a situation like this. I would act fast and reinforce the active shooter aid by finding safety, helping and warning others, and protecting the children by all means necessary. References Condon, Bernard (July 19, 2022).
