LAB 11 – (Turn in this sheet next lab – Sheet 1)
Name ___ Lab__11____
Rationale: Lab 11 is designed to allow students to calculate and understand the concept of a
correlation since an experiment requires that the variables have a relationship in order to make
an experiment logical.
All analysis will take place using the Sample data that is posted in the lab folder on CANVAS. You will
open this EXCEL file and use this data to complete the following to fulfill the requirements for the lab.
1.
Calculate the correlation between Minutes of moderate physical activity and Minutes of
vigorous physical activity.
r = ___
0.0621549
Is this correlation what you anticipated? Explain why or why not?
As time of the moderate activities increases, so do the other minutes of the vigorous
activities. I feel like one should decrease as the other increase, for example, moderate
decreases as vigorous increases.
2.
Choose four logical relationships and calculate the correlation for each relationship and
explain how the correlation does or does not represent the relationship in the way you
anticipated.
Correlation 1 – Independent variable __mod activ.___ Dependent variable _BMI_
r=
-0.5433099
Is this correlation what you anticipated? Explain why or why not
yes, I did anticipate the value to be a negative correlation.
Based on the data given on the
spreadsheet and a quick look at the values before they were correlated, I was expecting a
positive correlation, because as activity increases the BMI should be decreasing.
Turn in these sheets for Lab 11 next week – Answer all items
Correlation 2 – Independent variable __cholesterol_
Dependent variable _resting heart
rate__
r= __
0.80561074
Is this correlation what you anticipated? Explain why or why not
No, I imagined that as cholesterol decreases, then the resting heart rate would decrease as well.
But it is a positive correlation, so If I plugged that in on a graph it would be a positive linear
graph rather then a negative linear graph.
Correlation 3 – Independent variable ___cholesterol __________ Dependent variable
__BMI____________
r= ____
0.9376008
Is this correlation what you anticipated? Explain why or why not
No, I was expecting the decrease of cholesterol to effect the BMI. So it would be a negative
correlation. However, BMI did not decrease with the cholesterol.
Correlation 4 – Independent variable ___min of act__________ Dependent variable
_cholestrol_____________
r=
-0.7718946
Is this correlation what you anticipated? Explain why or why not
Yes, I was anticipating for cholesterol to decrease as minutes of activity increased. Which
represents the negative correlation above.
