Big data is the term for large, complicated data sets that are too big and complex to handle well with standard data processing tools (MongoDB, n.d.). The four V's—volume, variety, velocity, and veracity—define it (Simplilearn, 2023). Variety refers to the various forms of data, velocity indicates the rate at which data is produced, and volume indicates the total amount of data. Veracity refers to the degree of uncertainty and quality of the data, and it needs to be handled (Astera, 2024). Big data comes in three primary forms: semi-structured, unstructured, and structured. Unstructured data lacks a predetermined framework, such as social media postings and videos, but structured data, like that in databases and spreadsheets, is arranged and simple to search. Semi- structured data falls in between, containing some organizational properties but not to the extent of structured data (SelectHub, 2024). Real-time examples of big data applications are prevalent across various industries. In transportation, big data is used for GPS applications and aviation analytics, where it processes large volumes of data to optimize safety and energy consumption. In advertising and marketing, big data is leveraged for targeted ad placements based on consumer behavior. The financial sector utilizes big data for fraud detection and risk management. Furthermore, big data is used in the media and entertainment sector for performance evaluation and content generation, and in retail for inventory analysis and workforce optimization. Big data is also helpful in the energy and utilities sector for grid management and energy consumption analysis, as well as in the healthcare industry for patient records and treatment analysis (Simplilearn, 2023; Astera, 2024).
