TED – Unit 2 Discussion
Universal design for learning is an approach that pursues to discard any barriers to learning for all students. UDL is typically directed by three main values: provide various way of representing what’s to be learned, offer multiple means of action and expression, and deliver multiple resources of engagement (Snowman & McCown, n.d.). UDL views diversity as a strength in learning environments. The Universal Design for Learning creates an educational environment that provide applicable and accurate options for students ("UDL Framework", n.d.). Utilizing the UDL approach provides gifted learners with different opportunities to engage them and encourage their learning. This approach offers a well needed challenge to gifted students. It allows them to self-direct their learning, create their own personal goals and objectives, gain confidence, and encourage engagement; all
while, they meet curricular goals as well ("UDL Framework", n.d.).
When using the UDL instruction approach, teachers can deliver content in more than one way, students become active learners who engage and analyze the content to gain understanding. In regular classroom settings, the accessibility of curricular materials and information is reduced due to a lack of linguistic alternatives. Utilizing the UDL approach provides alternatives for key information. Important information would appear in the learners dominant language or ASL if deaf ("UDL: Promote understanding across languages", 2022). Using both dominant and heritage languages allow for students to learn at the same capacity as their peers. Printed materials in the classroom is typically fixed and permanent. Without having to take additional essential arrangements, the UDL approach would allow for the same information to be customized and prepared to meet each students individual needs. This allows for students to continue their education without disruptions or inabilities hindering their success. UDL also offers alternatives for auditory information. This concept allows for students with hearing disabilities to process information by hearing emotions and significance in the sounds. Snowman, J., & McCown, R.
