Alexis Bourdeix Review and Assessment of Autodesk University Session – Transforming Construction for Growth Date & Time of Presentation: September 29 – 56min25s Speakers: Matt Warren: Head of Digital Engineering – Lendlease Sunil Doraijan: Senior Director, Construction Industry Strategy – Autodesk Lindsey Rem: VP Business Transformation – Barton Malow The presentation focuses on the transformation of construction for growth. Three speakers presented their views on the digital transformation of the AEC and how this transformation can be used for growth. They all present a specific view of the topic. Matt Warren strives to develop digital tools in his company and teach his colleagues how to use them. He chose to explain how growth needs people to be coordinated and why digital tools are necessary for that. Sunil Doraijan shows the current problems in construction management and the solutions we have, including data. Lindsey Rem is charged with figuring out how to transform her company's project with the goal of using more digital tools. She presents methods using new technologies inspired by how other industries use technology. They noticed the importance of good coordination in construction projects in order to have good growth. Construction projects are always low margin and high risk. The goal is to reduce the risks that have the most impact on profits and increase growth. Most of the risks are due to poor coordination and collaboration. The presentation tells us that 35% of time is wasted in non-optimal activities. Our three speakers are convinced that a digital construction transformation is the solution. Project members need more support and new technologies can play this role. For example, we can increase automation or develop a platform where all information and communications are available to each project player. These new technologies provide access to a lot of data, and that number will increase in the future as construction projects increase due to factors such as population growth. Today, data is not being used to its full potential. 96% of project data remains unused after the project is completed. Better use of data can avoid wasting time reworking tasks. We often encounter the same problems on different projects and data collection can be useful to understand the problems and find the reasons. All this implies a transformation of our construction management methods. To change our methods, we can also look to other industries, as many are further along in digital transformation than AEC. These industries use a lot of automation tools. Making some investments to find new tools can be attractive for growth because with automation you have less risk during construction tasks. It also allows for safer construction and protection of workers. I think this presentation is related in many ways to the CVEN 638 course and project management. It talks about technology in the AEC industry and how a digital transformation can help solve management problems. We have seen in class the importance of management and coordination when using BIM software and with the lecture we understand that as well. The lecture shows the importance and potential of data in a construction project. I would like to know more about the tools used to collect data and how we can use data from a previous project in another project.
