Hey class, There are a few assessment activities that I utilized in this week’s module to help further develop my community assessment project. I really liked the U.S. Census Bureau Quick facts. This was super easy to use. All I had to do was put my zip code in and my town popped up. This site was very easy to give a breakdown to answer questions about population and race along with providing a breakdown of percentages of that race. I did not like the epodunk site provided. It just took me to an apartment search and that did not help me get an answer for any of my questions. The City-Data site provided some good information, but it was just brief unlike the Census Bureau Quick facts. The Healthy People 2030 site was very useful for information gathering. I found this site easy to use. My favorite thing about this site is that when you search a topic it gives you a breakdown with a section for evidence-based resources only. That is a great section to help weed out sources of information that you may not need or can be misleading. The link for federal agencies with statistical programs unable to be found upon clicking those links so I did not find that useful of course because I could never access the site. The CDC site I found useful knowledge about community health. I utilized this site during the COVID pandemic because it has a data tracker, and you can look up your community specifically and see all the documented COVID infection data. I found the America’s Health Ranking site interesting, and the color-coded map provides a great overview to see your state and how harshly or high ranked it is depending on the health issue. I have attempted to visit our
local health department to see what resources and educational materials they have, but we are
a very small town, and they are currently only open on Tuesday from 9-2. As far as data generation, I think windshield surveys are a great way to gather data. It is a very easy was to assess the community and I catch myself doing this on road trips whenever I pass through towns, and I utilized this tool to gather data. Focus groups, informant interviews, and participation observation are also great tools to use for a community assessment. However, I feel that you want to gather data from a diverse source so you can compare the difference of the views. You also have open discussions and that could also lead to people arguing. I just do not feel that these are my style either. As far surveys go, I think that is an awesome data gathering tool. There are sites that can allow you to create free surveys. You can post them to your social media, email them to people, or text them. Once complete it automatically breaks down the data for you. A wide variety of things can be covered in those types of surveys. In my research something I found interesting was that we have a higher population of women than men. According to the U.S Census Bureau (2022), the QuickFacts data for Lincoln County, Georgia shows the population percentage of women is 50.5% and our male population percentage is 49.5%.
