Carlos Menjivar 01/25/2024 ITN 266 Getting to know SANS The journey of the SANS Institute Cybersecurity resources project is reviewed in this paper. Some of the goals that I had in mine included understanding critical security controls in-depth, practically using security principles and taking note of the steps needed. The assignments that were done were to research topics in the cybersecurity field, reviewing papers and modifying security policies to fit the context. These tasks resulted in having a better ability to work through complex cybersecurity policy development and becoming more flexible to the constant changes that occur in the digital security field daily. There were expectations beginning the project such as the SANS Institute website to be clear and user-friendly. Upon seeing the updates with the site, it was more challenging to navigate. The instructions given didn’t align with the website’s recent change in design, so it was required to use other resources to find features such as “CIS Controls V8 and Reading Room.” With this, I was challenged to be creative and find other ways to get the information needed. Being resourceful was a major skill gained, along with adaptability to deal with websites that may not have everything laid out the same way as expected. Similar to the digital world, things are constantly changing and adapting to it is a skill to have. After browsing through the SANS updated site to find major security resources, it emphasized how cybersecurity practices are always changing. For example, to be able to personalize the email policy template to my name and network it indicated how important it is to adapt frameworks to the needs of a specific organization. Therefore, my document editing skills were confronted since it required attention to small details and accuracy.

(STEP 3) CIS Controls v8 Page: This visual depicts the “CIS Controls v8” feature on the webpage. An in-depth look at current cybersecurity practices recommended by the Internet Security Center is given. Overall, the site provides a list of updated controls, mainly focusing on changes made in the newest version. This provides a point of reference for organizations to understand how they can protect themselves in case of a major cybersecurity threat. (STEP 6) SANS Reading Room:
