Standards and population information Subject Science Grade Level 8 Topic Ecosystems Description of Target Populations, Special Considerations, and Learning Environment This public school is in Rome, GA, a city renowned for its historical landmarks. Rome is home to two prominent colleges, Berry College, and Shorter University. The capital, Atlanta, is conveniently located just 1.5 hours from the city. Atlanta boasts major sports teams and significant historical and educational museums, including STEM-focused institutions like the Fernbank Science Center. The Earth Science class comprises students aged 12-13, encompassing both genders and representing diverse cultural backgrounds. In this class, students navigate various family structures, with the majority residing in single-parent households, while others live with both parents. Two students currently experience a supportive environment in open-door homes with significant staff assistance. Many students actively engage in extracurricular activities and clubs, reflecting a vibrant and involved community. It is crucial to acknowledge that these students, like many others, have faced the challenges of the COVID pandemic, leading to ongoing adjustments as they acclimate to the demands of school, lessons, and academic content.
