in use in your chosen scenario impact human behavior.
The water crisis in Flint, Michigan left many residents without potable drinking water or water to
take showers. As a result, many residents opted to collect rainwater or buy bottled water to stay hydrated and clean. This proved to be very expensive for most residents as time went on.
Describe the impact
of the current resource use on the environment.
The government’s mishandling of the city’s water supply was a direct result of the water crisis that began in 2014. This left 100,000 people without adequate drinking water. This had a significant impact on residents who had little resources.
Describe how human ideology impacts behavior regarding the environmental systems.
Different human ideologies may have significant impact on the environment. Individuals who are more nature conscious tend to be more sustainable and conservative. On the other hand, others may see the environment as strictly a source to exploit for their own benefit.
Explain the role of cultural bias
in your chosen group’s approach to global sustainability.
Cultural beliefs and traditions can influence the behaviors of individuals. For example, one culture may have beliefs that care to preserve nature while another may see it as the exact opposite. Part Two: Profile
Describe the value of sustainability practices
in human and environmental systems.
Ensuring economic viability, preserving vital resources, improving social justice, conserving the environment and building up resilience to future problems are all factors that should be prioritized in human activities. To ensure that these factors are met, sustainability practices are set in place to prioritize the responsible use of human resources while limiting possible harm to the natural environment and ecosystems. Setting effective practices in place will inevitably lay the foundation for future generations to be able to have better futures and get the most out of the environment.
Explain the relationship between sustainable systems and human equity in the context of the related profile.
Both sustainable systems and human equity have an interconnected relationship. Sustainable systems are designed to be self-sustaining and to last a long time. Though often associated with environmental sustainability, these systems may also refer to economic and social systems as well. Regardless of one’s background and or circumstances, having human equity means that everyone should have equal access to natural resources and opportunities. However, in scenario two, there is a great deal of inequity with the city prioritizing fixing broken sidewalks and sewage while neglecting other areas like fixing roads. The city would much rather spend money to beatify medians rather than investing in areas that would better serve the community.
Describe how conflict resolution is used in the profile to support sustainability.
Conflict is inevitable and is a critical aspect of sustainability. It is the process of ending a dispute and reaching a reasonable agreement for all parties involved. Scenario two utilizes conflict resolution to promote sustainability by addressing residents’ concerns for the environment and the neighborhood. They do this by attending the community organized association where they identify and discuss common
issues that have raised in the neighborhood. They have made it their duty to examine the water crisis in full detail where they will identify errors and barriers the municipality may have encountered. Then they
will work with the city in implementing these measures to prevent further inequity. Explain how cultural systems
relate to sustainability within the profile.
The shared beliefs, values, customs and behaviors of individuals are known as cultural systems. Members of a specific community use these concepts to cope with one another and the world around them. According to the organizational profile, about a quarter of the population speaks a language other
than English and the median family income is average compared to the rest of the population. Part Three: Actionable Steps
Explain why sustainability improvement
is needed in your chosen group. Improving sustainability is crucial for any organization in ensuring its long-term success and survival. It is important to be able to adopt practices that meet ongoing needs while balancing the needs
of future generations. The constant lack of resources may impede the community’s ability to function efficiently and accomplish objectives. Therefore, the group can guarantee the availability of vital resources and be well equipped for unforeseen circumstances. Describe how the perspectives of the various stakeholders of your chosen group provide a context to
improve sustainability practices related to the concerns of the group.
The stakeholders of the chosen group may include the employees, investors, customers and local community. Each group may have different viewpoints and concerns related to sustainability. The employees may be concerned about the safety and health of working conditions. Investors are always on the hunt for companies with long-term profitability. Customers who care for the environment may favor environmentally friendly products. The surrounding environment and economy may be the concern of the locals. Therefore, understanding and addressing everyone’s concerns to benefit all stakeholders will improve the overall sustainability of the company.
Explain how cultural diversity
in your chosen group can be of value in addressing sustainability issues. According to the organizational profile, Elm Glen residential neighborhood is a densely urban area with a diverse population. These diversities can be valuable assets when addressing the issues of sustainability. Having different cultures come together means having different insights to problem solving. This may lead to innovative and more effective approach to sustainability. This means that the needs of the various stakeholders can be met more effectively.
Describe actionable steps
your chosen group could take for each pillar of sustainability.
There are three pillars of sustainability: social, economic and environmental. Social sustainability
is ensuring fair labor practices and promoting diversity and inclusion to protect human rights. Actionable
steps to enforce this could be to allocate funds in uplifting and improving the local communities. Economic sustainability practices are set in place to create sustainable business models, invest in technologies and ensure fair trade practices. Actionable steps could be taken to allocate funds to promoting employment opportunities. Environmental sustainability implements energy efficient practices, reduce waste and minimize environmental impact. Actionable steps could be for residents to become environmentally friendly and be more aware of the impact their actions may have on the environment.
