4-1 Short Paper: Entrepreneurial Approaches
The targeted audience for technical writing in the realm of computer technology can vary
widely. It could potentially include customers, consumers of a company's products, company
stakeholders, or even other technical writers in this category. Any person with a deep interest or
career with direct involvement in computer technology is a potential client because they may be
seeking this information for various reasons including sharpening their own skillset. To acquire
and retain clients in this field it would be beneficial to network, and ask for word of mouth
referrals. We can also offer discounts to first-time clients, or offer coupons to returning
customers. We can use online reviews to our advantage as well as developing partnerships with
online stores that sell relevant products in the computer industry. All of these proposals will amp
up your exposure and name, as well as create a positive rapport for the great work you do.
It is a common practice in the world that technical documentation should warn the
readers about any dangers that may be caused by the use of the product described. Any warnings
about the product will protect from potential legal suits in the future. You will also need to ge
some project contracts together so that your clients and you both have a concrete layout of
exactly what your plan is. This also protects you in court if need be by outlining exactly what the
project is and what you are hired to do. This can include, the scope of the project, important
deadlines, estimated cost, how and when payments should be made, who will retain the rights to
the finished product, and what exactly marks the completion of the project. You will also want to
get invoices for the clients and yourself. Certain projects you may also need an NDA so that
privacy is protected if need be for the client and for protection of yourself.
For taxes you will also have some adjustments as a self-employed individual. As an
employee, you were paying FICA tax, which was 7.65% of your gross income. Your employer
was also paying a matching percentage, putting it at a total of 15.3%. Once you're self-employed,
you have to pay both sides of that tax, or 15.3%. On average, self-employed people do pay
higher taxes. The on-paper tax rate is higher because of self-employment tax. That is a
consideration that is important for anyone considering self-employment. That said, there are
circumstances that can lead to self-employed people paying lower effective taxes. You will have
to figure out most of the details during tax season but be aware that your tax rate will need to be
adjusted for self-employment.
