An operating system is system software that manages computer hardware, software resources, and provides common services for computer programs. “The parts of an operating system all exist so as to make the various parts of a computer system work together. All user software program has to undergo the operating system in order to utilize any of the hardware, whether it be as basic as a mouse or keyboard or as complicated as an Internet component” (Volker, 2018). “Operating systems can perform action such as, but not limited to: Receiving user input from input hardware devices such as the keyboard or mouse Sending user output to output hardware devices such as the monitor or printer Controlling the use of processing devices by applications Serving as a platform for applications Moderating software Providing security Managing the file system” (Testout, n.d.). There are four main components of an operating system and they are as follows: Kernel “The kernel is the core of the operating system. It's what's loaded into memory when the system boots up. The kernel performs most of the critical operating system jobs just mentioned. It's responsible for managing the file system. It's responsible for managing security, for working with the hardware, and for providing a platform for applications to run on. The kernel runs behind the scenes and does the bulk of the work, so you won't work directly with it” (Testout, n.d.). Device Drivers “A driver is a type of computer program that enables the operating system to interact with hardware devices” (Testout, n.d.). User Interface “The interface allows the user to interact with the kernel and the utilities. There are two different types of interfaces” (Testout, n.d.). “The first type of interface is a command line interface. An example of a command line interface is Linux.
The second type of interface is called a graphical user interface, or GUI, as it's known in the industry. Instead of using a command line, a GUI represents things graphically on the screen. The command line interface and the graphical user interface are both fantastic for their different purposes. Sometimes you need the power and flexibility offered by a command line interface. However, when you're just doing day-to-day work, it's nice to be able to double click on something and have it work” (Testout, n.d.). System Utilities “Utilities are the features or programs included with an operating system that perform system-related tasks. Common Windows utilities are Control Panel and This PC. Common Linux utilities are cd, grep, and ls” (Testout, n.d.). Comparison of Operating Systems: Operating System Description Windows Operating System “The Windows operating system (Windows OS) for desktop PCs are more formally called Microsoft Windows and is actually a family of operating systems for personal computers . Windows dominates the personal computer world, running, by some estimates, more than 90 percent of all personal computers – the remainder running Linux and Mac operating systems” (Beal, 2018). Apple IOS “IOS (formerly iPhone OS ) is a mobile operating system created and
developed by Apple Inc. exclusively for its hardware . It is the operating system that powers many of the company's mobile devices, including the iPhone and iPod Touch ; it also powered the iPad until the introduction of iPadOS in 2019. It is the world's second-most widely installed mobile operating system, after Android . It is the basis for three other operating systems made by Apple: iPadOS , tvOS , and watchOS (Wikipedia,2020) . Mac Operating System “Mac OS is considered the pioneer of GUI based operating systems, as it was launched when MS-DOS was the industry standard. Mac OS is a completely capable OS that provides functionality and services similar to Windows or Linux OS. Some of the code base and features of Lisa OS have been incorporated in Mac OS. Mac OS is designed to operate on Apple manufactured PCs and by default, does not support x86 architecture” (Technopedia, n.d.). Linux Operating System “Linux is the best-known and most- used open source operating system. As an operating system, Linux is software that sits underneath all of the other software on a computer, receiving requests from those programs and relaying these requests to the computer’s hardware” (OneSource, n.d.). Recommendations: For gaming use, I would recommend the Windows Operating system for personal computers because those operating systems are the most used which allows people to find help easier when there is a problem. Windows Operating system has many different ones
