University of Waterloo – PD 1 p. 1 ASSIGNMENT 5: PERSONAL PITCH Student Name: Sajira Nageswaran Part A: Networking Scenarios You will begin this assignment by coming up with two of your own networking scenarios (requires you to think realistically about what you might encounter given your career stage, field of study, etc.). You will then choose a scenario (your own or one we've suggested) to use in the remainder of the assignment. First, describe two networking scenarios you think you might encounter in the near future (or scenarios you’ve already encountered and wish you had been more prepared for) 1. Through my internship last summer, I attended a conference and we were given the time to network with different employers from different companies to help future co-op placements. 2. During my high school co-op class, we were given the opportunity to give a pitch on how we would be an asset to the team to different small business CEO to potenially be given the opportunity to seek a co-op placment. The following are a few possible scenarios we came up with. 3. You find someone you'd like to connect with through Ten Thousand Coffee's Search and Discovery feature and want to start the conversation. 4. You are attending an industry meetup and find yourself sitting at a table with the manager at a company you have heard great things about. They don’t work in your dream department, but still might be a valuable contact. 5. A relative gives you the email address of a family friend who is working in the same industry you hope to go into. 6. You find yourself on a plane sitting next to a chatty person. They don’t work in your field, but you find out they do work at a company that you’ve heard great things about and are interested in. 7. You attend a virtual networking event where you can browse through employers and connect via video conferencing to discuss potential job opportunities. 8. A company you are following on Instagram launches a funny photo contest. They ask entrants to include a short blurb about
University of Waterloo – PD 1 p. 2 themselves. You would have participated in the contest anyways, but this also seems like an opportunity to carefully promote yourself as a potential future employee. 9. You're browsing LinkedIn for new opportunities and come across a job that you think you'd be great for. You want to connect with the employer to ask a few questions before submitting your application. 10. A guest speaker in one of your classes discusses an aspect of your field you are very interested in. You approach them after class. Choose one of the above scenarios (by checking a box) . You can choose your own or one we’ve provided. Part B: Crafting Your Personal Pitch, Part 1 In this section, you will answer specific questions about your chosen scenario. Your answers will form the ingredients of the personal pitch you write in Part C. Each of these elements was referred to in the unit lesson. It can be very hard to create a pitch for an abstract scenario so make up some concrete details (e.g. For scenario 3, pick a specific person; For scenario 5, identify the industry; For scenario 7, choose an employer, etc.). Who are you giving your pitch to? - What industry do they work in? - What company do they work for? - What is their role within that company/industry? Provide concrete details here so your TA knows the context of your pitch. I am giving my pitch to an employee at a company called Skip the Dishes. I was talking to somone in the Project Manager sector.Their role is ot overlook all phases of their projects and campaings, from planning to delivery. WHY do you want to give this person your personal pitch? What are you hoping to achieve? I want to give this specific person a pitch because their job role is something I hope to do in the future. By opening a discussion, I hope to gain valuable information and advice that could help me follow their footsteps into one day becoming a project manager. What relevant pieces of information do you think you should convey? I would mention my past role as a Business Administraitve Intern at a

What could you say to express your interest in them, their company, or the industry in general? One thing I could mention is how much I love food and being able to market that on social media and overseeing each project would be something that would definetly interest me. What question or leading statement could you use to engage the person in conversation? My leading statmenet, I would choose to ask a question which will open a conversation and show my interset into the comapny. The question I would ask is “What is the work enviornment like at Skip the Dishes?” Asking this quesiton will show that I feel like working with a strong team and supportive management is important. Anything else you want or need to consider? (optional) One thing to consider is that there might not be an hiring positions in the sector that I’m interested in. But it’s important to remember to grab some form of connection like Linkedin so we could discuss any future opportunies or they could possibly refer me to a simialr department where I could find an interest in.
