1 Tran MIS 255 1/14/17 Deliverable 1- Describe the Day in Life of an Informatician. In order to understand the responsibilities of informatician, first, we need to understand the concept of health informatics. According to Todd Johnson, a professor at UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics, health informatics is the study that is very unique, and combines biology, computer and information science. As everyone knows, nowadays, technology plays a very important role as involving into all the fields to get the work done effectively, such as business, production, and of course healthcare, etc. Professor Johnson also mentions that to be an informatician, a set of skills called computational thinking is needed. This set of skills includes decomposition, pattern recognition, pattern generalization and abstraction, and algorithm design. Decomposition means that informatician know how to break and organize tasks into steps, then work can be done more effectively as problem could be solved step by step. Pattern recognition is where making prediction the cause of problems bases on the collected data. Pattern generalization and abstraction can be defined as discovering the principles causes or law that cause these patterns. Algorithm design helps informatician develop the instructions of repeating the process to solve the problems overtime. Informatician can be described as the person who studies health informatics, and know how to implement technology to support their employer. Students in this field will learn how to collect data, process, and find solution and use technology to solve different problems. They often collaborate with medical and health care professionals on computer to solve problems. According to the article “Who are the Informaticians? What We Know and Should Know?”, informaticians mostly are clinicians, IT or HIM professionals. They are often with the background in health, management, and computer area. The field of health informatics major is very broad, and depending the specialty of each informatician, they will focus on the area that they are expertise at, such as database, security, system and data analysis, etc. As mentioning the article “The Typical Workday in Health Informatics”, generally, health informaticians are not responsible for taking care of patient. However, they work closely with management and administrative teams to use technology to assist. They may also work with IT department to help develop and test computer system before training staff member to use the new system. For example, specifically, according to the article “The Life of a Nurse Informaticist”, the author describes a typical day for an informatics nurse specialist. Their responsibilities are designing and building of different EHR functions. The article also has some of the tasks that an informatics nurse needs to get done during the day. They need to design, develop, modified informatics solutions. Also, they need to evaluate data structure, and help to make decision to support their employer. They need to collect and analyze data in order to improve the healthcare system as well as nursing service. They apply knowledge of computer science, information science to nursing practice. Some of the weekly and monthly tasks also are mentions in the article. The informatics nurse has the responsible of using object-oriented models or other methods to present the information between nurses and systems engineers. They are also in charge of identify, collect, and analyze date from services for patients. They also need to update and give training employee to update with the current information system. Technique support regarding hardware and software configuration is required the informatics nurse to provide as well.
