IDS 105 Project Template Cultural Awareness Guidebook Olivia Holland Identify your chosen scenario. Personal It’s the time of year when you gather with friends and family. Recent events in the news have caused differences of opinion and communication related to issues of justice and fairness, creating conflict with those you care about. You are hosting the next holiday celebration with your family members and friends with diverse thoughts and opinions. Conflict #1 – Disagreement with a family member about a political issue You and your sister-in-law, who is from a different culture, have always been close. Lately, you have been having disagreements about politics. Your sister-in-law is a passionate supporter of one political party, while you align more closely with the other. You have had several heated debates about issues that impact different cultures and identities, such as gun control, immigration, and healthcare, and you have both become increasingly frustrated with each other. One day, while having dinner together, the conversation turns to a recent controversial policy proposal. You find yourselves on opposite sides of the issue, and the conversation quickly becomes heated. You both begin to speak more loudly and interrupt each other. Part One: Social Justice (Complete this section in Module Two.) 1. Explain the difference between justice, fairness, and equality in the scenario. Because of my cultural background I feel as if my political party understands more about what is fair and bringing justice and equality to the community. I am Mexican-American and I feel as if my cultural background isn’t treated fair simply because of our last name, skin color or language barriers. Are we fair to everyone? No. because of the cultural background some don’t qualify for certain resources. I feel like we may have different views based on personal experiences. Therefore, you are not going to see where my own political views come from. Fairness is making sure everyone receives the same resources and opportunities, regardless of their situation. Do you feel as if your political party is providing the fairness people deserve? I could be Bias, but many of the same conflicts I have endured myself give me reason to believe that we are all not treated fair. Can you describe equality? Equality is being fair while giving resources to a large group rather than one person. For example, insulin isn’t necessary available to all groups with diabetes. Some are prescribed a generic brand that may not work well with all other medications. 2. Describe how bias can influence your perception of social justice in the scenario.
With these examples of equality and fairness may all lead towards justice. When groups feel that there should be justice served, we form protest and groups that fight for change. Social justice from my understanding is an injustice situation that the community come together to find change. When the world was exposed to the tragic death of George Floyd the world came together and formed justice towards those who are victim to police brutality. 3. Describe how different narratives in society can impact your perception of social justice. I believe that different narratives can impact my perception of social justice because of some narratives that include my own culture. For example, border patrol splitting up families from their children because of immigration status can impact my perception. 4. Describe the core principles of social justice in the scenario. Access to resources, are we all given the same resources despite our socioeconomic status? Are we ensuring that resources are given to each part of the community no matter what? Are all people able to speak out without fear of judgement or bias towards them, can they participate freely? Do you feel that each individual is given every opportunity despite their age, sex, or disability? Are we all treated with Basic Human Rights no matter our political views, economic rights or legal rights Part Two: Intercultural Communication and Collaboration 1. Describe how an awareness of other cultures can benefit interpersonal communication with people in the scenario. 2. (Complete this section in Module Four.) “I am so glad that you have decided to have this conversation with me even though you came from a different background and your preference in communication may be with more expression that what I am use to” A person having a debate over a political issue can bring in so much emotion and trauma that we have to be careful about how we talk and interpret what is discussed being said. For instance, certain saying may not mean the same things as it would from a different country. This scenario would be a face-to-face situation. The two adults are discussing political issues over dinner. For this scenario it is important to consider how we are interpreting visual communication. How my eye interprets how I am feeling about the situation can help the debate go smoothly. My own body language speaks volumes, A shrug or an eyeroll can be considered a disrespect in some cultures or even not responding at all and leaving the table. Being mindful of our own cultural differences can help the conversation. What do I know about this person how can I bring in some of the things I know to understand our views in this scenario. 3. Describe how exposure to diverse backgrounds can positively influence communication in the scenario. 4. (Complete this section in Module Four.)
Over the years, either in my personal life or in my work life exposure to different backgrounds has helped me understand people more effectively. In any type of scenario, it is important to compile all the important difference’s that you have learned. For example, understanding your audience when you are talking to a different culture or ethnic or even religious groups. Making sure that what you are talking about doesn’t offend the party that you are talking to. For example, talking about sexual orientation or even sexual content can offend certain cultures. Refraining from those conversations can also help those individuals trust your way of communication. Understanding the preferred communication style of your peers can also help you with effective and positive communication. what is their preference? Do they prefer a more face to face style, Text or email or phone call. What are your peers comfortable with. In this scenario I have to refrain from mentioning the cultural biases that come with her background. Because I have had conversations with her specific background, I am more aware of things that I should and shouldn’t say. I also make sure that the conversation is lead with intent and patience. Being opened minded to the cultural difference can help the overall relationship during the conversation. When I communicate with my sister in-law, I like to make sure that she has the opportunity to make her point and to be respectful of her time. I also reassure her that I understood her point by actively listening. All the concepts are from communication exposure from other diverse groups 5. Explain why an awareness of diversity is beneficial to collaboration in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.) We can all agree that there are issues in the world that influence our way of life. One thing that can help us understand one another is to become more familiar of our own personality when it comes to communication. For instance, I am very extroverted and can adjust to different groups when it comes to communication. It tends to be easy when it comes to talking to strangers. I have no fear of this and can have meaningful conversations. In observing my sister inlaw I have come to the conclusion that she has an openness and agreeableness approach with her communication technique. I am also a conscience person and I tend to make sure I see the point of view of all. These attributes can help us both collaborate to a more meaningful organized conversation rather than fighting over who is right. 6. Describe how you would demonstrate cultural fluency in the scenario. I understand that we both come from different cultures and different backgrounds. You and I were born and raised in a different household with different cultures. I grew up not really being allowed to even play with guns and was taught that they were hurtful and unnecessary. However, culturally your experience with firearms is to make memories. You went hunting with your father and often went to a shooting range. The understanding of firearms and those educational skills was always a learning time and a way for you and your father to bond. A bonding experience for me wasn’t through Hunting but through other forms of love such as cooking, or taking trips together. This culture difference can also shape your view of firearms in the home. I do believe that our understanding of different cultures shape how we view different political topics such as firearms. We have so many different cultures in our country that each culture has their own opinion of firearms. I respect your culture’s view; I believe that all cultures have a different perspective of what bonding looks like. For some cultures its bonding over food or trips and for others is doing a sport or activity such as hunting, fishing or just getting together with your family. And because of your culture you are more prepared to handle a handgun better than I can. This would benefit anyone in a potentially dangerous situation. 5. Describe how cultural fluency benefits your self-awareness. (Complete this section in Module Three.)
