MIST
WK 7 Video Case
1. What event convinced Netflix to switch to a cloud-based service?
It was database corruption in August 2008 that convinced Netflix to switch to a
cloud-based service. For a few days the company has had problems with
shipping discs or DVDs. The company realized that they needed to switch to a
more fully tolerant system that would not have failures like this. Netflix then
began to use AWS which was a clear leader in the cloud space and would be an
extremely reliable and good option for Netflix to choose. AWS was able to
provide the capacity that the company was able to grow into. In 2010 Netflix was
able to launch the Iphone streaming service that was 100% out of the cloud.
2. What is Chaos Monkey and why is it important for Netflix and its use of AWS?
Chaos Monkey is a tool that is used to intentionally break things in production to
make sure that they are able to survive failures. Netflix constantly has to test its
ability to survive any kind of failure to ensure one never happens again which is
why they developed the tool Chaos Monkey. It is in a sense a test in the
production and in the way the company is running its technology to make sure
that the customer always gets the best product and they will never have to deal
with a failure in the system. If there is ever a failure in the system with the use of
Chaos Monkey theory, we are able to know exactly how to fix it in a time and cost
efficient way.
3. Why is it important for Netflix that AWS has multiple availability regions?
It is important that they as an international company are able to have many
different availability regions so that customers are able to enjoy the service and
product of Netflix across the country and world. It is especially important for a
company like this to have servers and terabytes of storage at minute's notice
especially with the multiple regions that Netflix provides services to. By using the
multiple availability zones Netflix is able to provide at a more efficient rate and a
higher availability rate. AWS is able to ensure that customers achieve a lower
latency and higher throughput so that there data resides only in the region they
specify
4. Do you watch TV or movies on Netflix? Have you encountered varying quality of
service at different times of day?
I do watch TV shows and movies on Netflix often. I have experienced various
quality of service at different times of the day. Oftentimes I notice that at night
when more people tend to watch their tv shows and movies that the quality of
service is worse. I often experience a blurrier video and sometimes even
buffering. Another time when the quality of service varies is when multiple people
in my house are watching on the same account at the same time. When this
happens I always experience buffering and also slower load times. I do feel
though that over time I have begun experiencing less differences in quality due to
the time of day.
