The OSI model takes the task of internetworking and divides it into what is referred to as a vertical stack that consists of seven layers. Review the diagram in the module overview to see each layer and a brief description of its functionality. Use the same industry you used in the Module One discussion. Identify one of the layers within this model and provide a summary of how it functions within a network of that industry. In your main post, explain why that layer is essential to the architecture configuration of the network.
After crafting your main post, review two of your classmates' posts and analyze how their communication levels operate with the others.
The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is comprised of seven layers that computer systems use to communicate over a network. The OSI model aims to promote a clear framework that explains the functions of an operational networking or telecommunications system and to provide direction to technology vendors and developers so that the digital communications products and software programs they develop can connect (Froehlich et al., 2021).
The industry I spoke about in my last post was the medical/healthcare industry. All the layers are important for this industry but the one I want to point out is the fourth layer, which is known as the Transport layer. The transport layer is responsible for transferring data across a network and provides error-checking mechanisms and data flow controls (Froehlich et al., 2021). Data is very important in a medical setting because this provides information about the patient, treatments that are needed, and the best business practices to exercise. Having the correct data on a patient can literally be the difference between life and death. When I last spoke about the medical/healthcare industry, I spoke particularly about the pharmaceutical division. When working in a mail-order pharmacy it is very important to receive error-free prescriptions through email or fax. If the doctor is prescribing a patient 0.100mg of medication and due to some unknown network error, it takes away the decimal point from the number, you will think that the prescription is for 100mg. This could result in an overdose. In terms of medication strength, 0.100mg and 100mg are completely different. When the doctor is sending over the prescriptions, they rely on the network to transport the correct information. One may look at it as if the doctor walked over to the pharmacy themselves and handed you the prescription directly to make sure you receive the instructions free of errors versus them sending it over a network hoping everything has been sent correctly. This is the job of the transport layer. The job is to make sure it went from one destination to another making sure the data is flowing correctly. References
