Evaluating strengths/weaknesses of policies to reduce recidivism & analyzing racial disparities in the criminal justice system. Introduction The criminal justice system plays a critical role in maintaining order and ensuring public safety in society. However, it is widely recognized that the criminal justice system is far from perfect, with significant challenges and limitations in place. Two of the most pressing issues within the criminal justice system today are reducing recidivism rates among offenders and addressing racial disparities in the criminal justice system. In this capstone research paper, we will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of current criminal justice policies for reducing recidivism and analyze the causes and effects of racial disparities in the criminal justice system, as well as identify potential solutions to address them. The issue of recidivism, or the re-offending of criminals, is a major concern for criminal justice professionals and policymakers alike. Despite efforts to reduce recidivism, the rate of re-offending remains high, with many offenders returning to prison within a few years of their release. Evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of current criminal justice policies for reducing recidivism is important in order to better understand why some policies are more effective than others, and to develop new and improved strategies for reducing recidivism in the future. The issue of racial disparities in the criminal justice system is also a critical concern, with significant evidence suggesting that individuals of color are disproportionately affected by various aspects of the criminal justice system, including arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment. Analyzing the causes and effects of racial disparities in the criminal justice system is essential in order to identify potential solutions to address these disparities and ensure that the criminal justice system operates fairly and equitably for all individuals, regardless of their race. The purpose of this research paper is to provide an in-depth examination of the current state of criminal justice policies for reducing recidivism and addressing racial disparities in the criminal justice system. The paper will be structured around two main research questions:
Evaluating strengths/weaknesses of policies to reduce recidivism & analyzing racial disparities in the criminal justice system. 1. What are the strengths and weaknesses of current criminal justice policies for reducing recidivism? 2. What are the causes and effects of racial disparities in the criminal justice system and what potential solutions exist to address them? The thesis statement for this research paper is as follows: "Current criminal justice policies for reducing recidivism and addressing racial disparities in the criminal justice system have both strengths and weaknesses, and there is a need for further research and analysis in order to develop more effective solutions for these critical issues." The terms "criminal justice system", "recidivism", and "racial disparities" will be defined and discussed in greater detail throughout the paper. The term “Criminal Justice System” refers to the various agencies and processes involved in the administration of justice. This includes law enforcement, the courts, and the correctional system. Law enforcement refers to the agencies and individuals responsible for enforcing laws and maintaining public order. The courts, on the other hand, are the judicial branch of government responsible for interpreting and applying laws in legal cases. Lastly, the correctional system refers to the institutions and programs responsible for punishing sentences for individuals convicted of crimes. " Recidivism” refers to the re-offending of criminals and is measured by the rate at which individuals return to prison or are re-arrested after their release. The goal of criminal justice policies is to reduce recidivism and keep communities safe. “Racial disparities” refer to the unequal treatment of individuals based on their race within the criminal justice system. This is a significant issue that needs to be addressed to ensure fair and equal treatment for all individuals in the legal system. The terms “Policies and programs” are a plan or course of action adopted and pursued by a government, political party, or other group with a specific long-term aim. In the context of the criminal justice system, policies and programs are implemented to address specific issues such as reducing

The effectiveness of these policies and programs is continuously evaluated to ensure they are achieving their intended goals. In the following sections of this paper, we will provide a thorough review of the literature on these two critical issues and discuss the results of our analysis. We will conclude by summarizing our findings and offering recommendations for future research and policy development in this area.
