What are the basic rules concerning subject–verb agreement, proper verb tense, and noun– pronoun agreement? Subject-verb: Two or more subjects joined by and usually require a plural verb. Two or more subjects joined by or or nor require a verb that agrees with the subject closest to the verb. Most indefinite pronouns require singular verbs. Indefinite pronouns are pronouns that do not refer to a specific person or thing such as anyone, everybody, nobody, someone, and something. Whether a collective noun requires a singular or plural verb depends on the function of the collective noun. Verb Tense: When presenting your position or legal analysis, use the present tense. When addressing a court opinion that has already been decided, use the past tense. Noun-pronoun: Pronouns must agree with their antecedents. Antecedents joined by “and” require a plural pronoun. The sentence was too long so I added a semicolon and made it flow better. I had an independent clause that I joined with a conjunctive adverb. 2. Mary reached the conclusion that she had made a mistake. Mary had reached the conclusion, that she had made a mistake. The first part of the sentence is an introductory phrase and needs a comma to separate it from the last part of the sentence. 3. A relative pronoun requires a verb which agrees with its antecedent. A relative pronoun requires a verb that agrees with its antecedent. I changed “which” to “that” because there was a pronoun problem. I needed to change to have a subject-verb agreement. 4. Either the cousins or Darryl are going to the party. Either the cousins or Darryl is going to the party. This sentence needed “is” instead of “are” because it is placed right after Darryl’s name. If it was after the cousins name it would be “are” because it would be plural. 5. Sara, after giving careful consideration to the matter, reached the conclusion that she should buy the business. After giving careful consideration to the matter, Sara, reached the conclusion that she should buy the business. It makes more sense to put Sara’s name in the middle of the action and put commas on both sides of her name. 6. He decided to thoroughly and completely test the theory.
