USE QUOTATIONS AND SPECIFIC REFERENCES FOR FULL CREDIT. 1. List the five Confucian relations: The 5 Confucian relations are Ruler & subject, Father & Son, Husband & Wife, Elder & Younger Sibling, and Friend & Friend. My answer is supported by, page 11 of the assigned text, Dawson on Confucius. “The five relationships. (i.e. the duties involved in the relationships between father and son, ruler and subject, husband and wife, older brother and younger brother, and friend and friend.)” 2. List the four ‘shoots’ of virtue: 1. Li 2. Humaneness 3. Dutifulness 4. Wisdom “Reflected by these social virtues. He regarded li (together with humaneness, dutifulness, and wisdom) as one of the four basic virtues” (Dawson on Confucius, Page 31). 5. List the five Classics: The five classics are: 1. The Book of Changes, 2. The Book of Songs, 3. The Book of History, 4. The Ritual, and 5. The Spring and Autumn. I received my answer from the text, Dawson on Confucius, page 3. “They were the book of changes, the book of history, the book of songs, the ritual (which included the record of rites), and the spring and autumn.”
6. For one of the lists above, explain its importance in Confucian culture and show how it is reflected in one of the Analects (give the number of the Analect and quote from it): The Confucian Culture prioritizes history and knowledge to a great extent. In the Confucian culture, learning, understanding, and reflecting on the previous generation is extremely vital to the culture since it ensures the success of the current generation. Seeking knowledge is crucial and understanding history is knowledge. “take what you know for what you know, and what you do not know for what you do not know, that is knowledge indeed.” (2.18 of the Analect) 7. Define the Confucian “gentleman” or “superior man.” A “gentleman” is someone who actively seeks knowledge, displays traits of modesty, is courteous, prioritizes productivity, chooses careful language, and surrounds themselves with individuals who embody similar values and principles. Page 10 of, Dawson on Confucius, states “a gentleman who, when he eats avoids seeking to satisfy his appetite to the full and, when he is at home, avoids seeking comfort, who is diligent in deed and cautious in word, and who associates those who possess the way and is rectified by them.”
