5-1 Journal: Supporting Roles How do the roles of the community outreach coordinator and other allied professionals support criminal justice professionals? Community outreach coordinators support criminal justice professionals by facilitating long- lasting relationships between law enforcement and citizens in their communities. One of the main goals of a community outreach coordinator is to gain the trust of citizens, then those citizens can gain the trust of the police in their community. The criminal justice systems sole purpose is crime prevention and crime control. They may also set up a neighborhood watch program, or even start a tipline. What do you see as the benefits to criminal justice professionals? The benefits are that they help criminal justice professionals establish and maintain good relationships between law enforcement and community members. They can also act as a contact person for community members and law enforcement professionals to make it easier for both to communicate with each other about problems in their communities. They also help connect criminal justice professionals to various opportunities within the communities, with the primary goal being preventing crime. What types of skills do you think these professionals need in order to effectively do their jobs? They need to have good communication skills so they can effectively communicate and interact with the citizens. They need to have good management skills, know how to problem
solve, and be quick thinking problem solvers. They need to have the ability to build good, strong working relationships. They need to be able to work in groups with other professionals. Strong organizational and general office skills. They must also have good computer skills, such as Word, Excel, and know how to make PowerPoint presentations. And they must have knowledge of marketing and promotion. They also need to be able to keep their own personal opinions about certain situations to themselves, not allowing how they may feel about a person, or situation, cloud their judgement. Lastly, they need to have patience, and maintain the ability to deal with difficult situations. References Staff Writers. (2019, December 11). Explore Careers in the Criminal Justice Field .
