1 According to the articles, what is ChatGPT? ChatGPT is described as a "language machine" in the article "Understanding Chat-GPT, And Why It’s Even Bigger Than You Think" (Josh Bersin, 2023). It's portrayed as an engine that mimics writing styles. Additionally, in the second article titled "ChatGpt Writes Performance Feedback," it's mentioned that ChatGPT writes performance feedback but doesn't explicitly define what ChatGPT is. Instead, it explores how ChatGPT associates qualities with specific genders when prompted with personality descriptions (Snyder, 2023).
2 According to the authors, why is the data biased? Josh Bersin highlights that the data might be biased because if engineers fail to continuously check it, the information generated could be flawed. He warns that without consistent monitoring, ChatGPT could potentially become a "disinformation machine" (Bersin, 2023). Moreover, Kieran Snyder discusses bias in ChatGPT's performance feedback. She points out that although the prompts for feedback were gender neutral, ChatGPT showed bias when dealing with descriptions where people typically have preconceived notions about gender (Snyder, 2023). Doing your own research, find and summarize a case where ChatGPT was used unethically. Be sure to include in-text citations and proper citations to your outside source using MLA or APA formatting. In a case reported by The New York Times, Lawyer Steven Schwartz was handling a lawsuit where Roberto Mata sued Avianca airlines for injuries sustained when a metal serving cart struck his knee during a flight from El Salvador to New York in August 2019. Mata's lawyers responded with a brief citing several court decisions supporting their argument. However, these cases were discovered to be nonexistent when Avianca's lawyers couldn't locate them, prompting the judge to request copies. It was revealed that the cases cited were fabricated, leading to ethical concerns regarding the use of ChatGPT. Schwartz admitted to using ChatGPT for the brief, which included six fake court decisions (Weiser & Schweber, 2023; Sloan, 2023). Discuss how the issue in question 3 might be mitigated. Your suggestion should be based on the use of at least one moral theory introduced in class (Kantianism, virtue ethics, rule/act utilitarianism, social contract theory). Mitigating the unethical use of ChatGPT can be approached through various moral theories: Kantianism (Sloan, 2023): - Benefit: Upholding integrity in legal proceedings. - Harm: Preventing false representation of legal precedents. - Right: Ensuring fairness and justice in legal practices. - Obligation: Lawyers have a duty to verify the authenticity of legal citations. - Duty: Upholding honesty and transparency in legal research. - Character: Cultivating a professional ethos based on truthfulness and accountability.
