Student Discipline and Due Process The Socorro Independent School District provides a safe and conducive learning environment for all students. As part of their commitment to maintaining discipline and ensuring academic success, the district has implemented a policy that allows for student suspension. While the policy generally applies to students in the third grade and up, it is important to note that each case is evaluated individually. Suspension is not intended as a punishment, but rather as an opportunity for students to reflect on their actions and make positive changes. They clarified on their website that, "A student who is enrolled in a grade level below grade 3 may not be placed in out-of-school suspension unless while on school property or while attending a school- sponsored or school-related activity on or off of school property" (Policy Code FOB – Student Discipline: Out-of-School Suspension – Socorro ISD Board Policy Manual - Policy Online). The SISD Board of Trustees has the authority to determine the suspension policy and to review and amend the policy at any time. The maximum length a student can be suspended can be up to three days where the students cannot be near, come to school, or participate in any school activities during those days. They have a minimum of one day suspension which depends on the severity of the incident. They do not have a different procedure for students with the minimum and maximum suspension. The procedure is the same for all students. The SISD provides all students with a positive behavior program that is designed to encourage positive choices and promote positive relationships among students. As part of the program, all students will be provided with opportunities to develop and practice positive behaviors and skills to make appropriate choices in a variety of situations. Goss v. Lopez 2
