CJAD 330: Management of Criminal Justice Agencies
Mr. Frederick Crawford
February 18, 2024
I.
Introduction
A.
Police work in today’s society looks vastly different than that of a decade ago. As society evolves, police agencies must evolve as well.
1.
Traditionally, police are known for enforcing the law, investigation of criminal activity, and maintaining public order. (Banton, 2024)
a)
Law enforcement still carry the basic duties, but new interpretation
of these duties has expanded their role. Early law enforcement officers’ duties focused on identifying a crime and apprehending the offender. The
duty of maintaining public order has enabled police officers the ability to help the community in many other ways. Just as duties have evolved so has the technology used to aid in these duties.
2.
One nation has always been known for diversity. The diversity of our nation reaches every community within its borders. To effectively protect and serve our nation and community, every member of the department must take an active role in building relationships with the diverse populations we serve.
II.
Body

The primary purpose of a police officer is to serve the community.
1.
Police serve the community in a variety of ways. These range from traditional duties such as addressing traffic concerns making the roads safer to apprehending violent criminals to acting as a social worker and providing interventions to the community.
a)
“Police officers spend a majority of their time on the job resolving conflicts, responding to family disputes, and providing other services to community residents.” (Tulane University, 2022)
B.
Technology like social media has allowed for law enforcement agencies to evolve
their practices.
1.
Police agencies have taken to social media to put notify the community about a wide range of topics such as recruiting, arrests, and personal stories about employees.
a)
“No matter how a social media effort is managed, agencies must focus on pushing as much information as possible to the public.” (Dawkins, 2023)
C.
Traditional policing established a foundation for police work. These basic principles evolved into the practice of community policing which has shown many benefits over traditional policing.
1.
Traditional based policing was a reactive model that focused on waiting for a crime to happen to act. Community policing takes a proactive approach to reducing crime. a)
Community policing strengthens the bond with the community, encourages information from the community, and creates a better community image of the agency. (Alshehri, 2021)
D.
Fostering a strong relationship between officers and the diverse community they serve creates benefits for everyone involved.
