After being created in January 2011, the English Language Arts (ELA) Learning Standards for New York State (NYS) were reviewed and modified in 2015. Following lengthy public comment periods and both virtual and in-person meetings with committees comprised of New York State educators, English language learners, multilingual learners, students with disabilities, parents, curriculum specialists, school administrators, college professors, and experts in cognitive research, the Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards (Revised 2017) were developed. These new standards represent the combined efforts and understanding of all parties involved. (Learning Standards for English Language Arts, n.d.) The
current English Language Arts Standards have been modified in 2017 by the New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards. These modifications include additions, deletions, vertical movement, and clarifications. When learners are exposed to excellent instructional contexts and learning circumstances, they are described as the information, skills, and understanding that they can and do convey throughout time. (Learning Standards for English Language Arts, n.d.) Advanced reading abilities are required of all students in New York State classrooms in order to support written and oral communication with a wider range of audiences and contexts. The English Language Arts and Literacy Standards and the Lifelong Practices of Readers and Writers in New York State both outline the knowledge and skills needed for students to be proficient communicators. (Literacy & English Language Arts (ELA), n.d.). There is a positive correlation between student achievement and the standards. Early reading engagement correlates with improved comprehension and understanding in children.
