Module 5 Reflection After going through module 5 this week and learning about PSL, I have definitely gained a deeper appreciation for the role of sign language in strengthening communities. In the example of hearing people using PSL, it really showed how sign languages can foster inclusivity and how they really have the power to bridge communication gaps among diverse communities. Before this week, I didn’t not know anything about Plains Indian Sign Language, but after learning, I now can see the potential for sign languages like ASL to have an even more significant impact on improving accessibility and equal participation for the Deaf community. After reflecting on my takeaways from the module, I do have some further questions. Firstly, I would like to know how we could promote the broader adoption of ASL among hearing individuals. Since PSL was so beneficial, I think ASL could be a beneficial subject required in early schooling. This subject has also led me to think more about practical strategies and initiatives that can make this a reality. It's clear that increasing awareness and exposure to sign languages is a crucial step toward creating a more inclusive society. For example, I know a lot of parents teach their babies ASL before they are able to speak coherently, and I have heard it can be very beneficial for improving communication abilities. The comparison between Crow Sign Language and ASL made me realize how sign languages can reflect the unique characteristics of different cultures and communities. It deepened my understanding of the importance of respecting these variations within the Deaf community and appreciating the historical and cultural contexts that shape them. Overall, this discussion has led me to think more deeply about the power of sign languages in promoting inclusivity and equal participation. It truly highlighted the need for ongoing efforts to raise awareness and ensure that sign languages like ASL are accessible to everyone, contributing to a more inclusive and diverse society.
