THST*1200: The Languages of Media Assignment One: Who Are You? YOUR SEEING IDEA Part ONE: Welcome | Introductions My name is Audrey Cullen! My university email is aculle01@uoguelph.ca and an alternative/personal email to message me in the case that I do not respond to my school email for some reason is audreycullen17@gmail.com . If you wish to contact me via cell phone if having trouble connecting to me, my personal number is 905-299-4599. I am a first-year student currently living in Guelph on residence in the Lennox-Addington complex (Addington). I am majoring in Culture and Technology Studies and hoping to minor in Media and Cinema studies! I am registered for a total of five courses this term including, Intro to Computing, Humans in the Natural World, CTS: Keywords and Sociology. One constraint that may limit my ability to learn that I would want you to know about is my anxiety. In this context, I do put a lot of pressure on myself as a result of it because I take my academics seriously but I can become easily overwhelmed, which the process of working through assignments more challenging. However, I do plan on utilizing a number of coping strategies and resources on campus to help me throughout the course of the term! Part TWO: Observations & Photography Walk Topic (1): Future
Photo Name: The Future is Green Description: This was a picture that I had taken on the first floor of the MacKinnon building. The generously large windows allow for a more scenic hallway than any other facility on campus, displaying gorgeous, authentic greenery that distracts one from the thought of even attending class. Though it provokes discussion worthy thoughts of two viable futures. A future, where greenery has overtaken a reset world. Humans extinct by our own doing and no longer being able to interfere and destroy its beauty, or one in which we exist in harmony with nature. As society continues to push for the industrialization and the advancement of technologies, our worlds fate, including the captivating vibrancy of every individual plant within this visual, are increasingly threatened on the daily. The future needs to be green not only to preserve the natural beauty and wonders of our planet, but to ensure a sustainable, healthy and clean future for all species to continue to grow amongst each other and maintain ecological balance. The future should be green because our home has been burning alive; an open wound bleeding and breathing poison longer than nature and our bodies would like. The clock is ticking down and this means taking action and making change, or our future will soon become an idea amongst fiction; native only to our dreams.
Topic (2): Safety Photo Name: The Cleansing of Autumn Description: This was a picture that I had taken just outside of the Lambton residence on the way back to my own dorm. The visual presents the simple image of myself, standing on the first few vibrant and fallen leaves of the autumn season. Although the fall is often regarded in a melancholy light, following the freedom of summer break; from a personal perspective, I find great comfort and warmth in the cool season. Autumn marks the start of a new school year and often a set of stressful academic related challenges along side it, but with it comes the ease of routine and fresh motivation. In addition to the season being cleansing and rich in opportunities, I also find safety in the overall experience of the season as it easily hosts some of my favourite things. From the visuals and colour changing trees, the pumpkin flavoured/scented everything, the crisp air, the expressiveness of fall attire; long coats and scarves, nourishing soups and stews, fireplaces, hot chocolates and good books, to the joy and comfort of remembering the upcoming family gatherings and holidays to look forward to. I derive

such pleasure from the season and welcome it with great enthusiasm, as the entirety of fall is the time of year in which I am feeling most myself, happy, safe and comfortable. Topic (3): Progress Photo Name: Blooming In New Soil Description: This was a picture that I had taken on Johnston Green and the image depicts the historically significant and recognizable building belonging to the University of Guelph, with students gathered in groups outside of its walls. I had decided to take a candid photo such as this in this particular setting to demonstrate the concept of progress as teens bloom in new soil, become wiser adolescent beings, meet new people and adjust to university student life. The idea of change is not always easy to process, but accepting it and being able to adapt in response to it can be even harder. With many beginning new challenging and exciting chapters of their lives often away from their home, family and friends, we learn of and become more embracive of our remarkable resiliency as humans. It is most usually required that we step into unfamiliar territory and out of our comfort zones in order to become better, adaptable learners. This image represents the challenge of new found independence and making effective, life-changing progress using it. By accepting transformative experiences in this
educational environment, we allow ourselves to grow into more mature and truer versions of ourselves alongside peers aboard the same boat. Making progress one step, action and word at a time. Reflection: I really enjoyed this activity and believe that is was an amazing exercise to initiate our Languages of Media journey! I found the task to actually be quite relaxing and less strenuous than one would think when it comes to an assignment. It was grounding, helped me develop a greater appreciation for the little things that make up my every day surroundings and worked in collaboration with some of my strengths and hobbies such as writing, making connections and photography! Something that I found of great value throughout the duration of completing this activity was the outlet it provided to be expressive and inventive with our words. I thoroughly admired the creativity of my fellow classmates and was intrigued to explore their connections and contrasting interpretations of the same words I was looking at. It was an interesting introduction and a more meaningful activity within an asynchronous learning atmosphere. The photographs were often special or personal and it allowed me to take a glimpse at every individuals character beyond their digital profiles. Some of the images that stood out to me in particular were under the safety subheading. The intimacy of photos presenting visuals of objects, spaces or other things that provide personal comfort, rather than something that universally represents safety such as a first aid kit, I found to be more touching and significant. Those photographs were more powerful through my eyes as they completely expanded the dimensions of the word beyond the literal meaning. In conclusion, I hope that this activity continues to be used for future classes as it was quite enjoyable and thought-provoking!
