School of Languages and Literatures Introduction to Classical Culture CLAS*1000 Research Assignment: Part I Using Tertiary Sources: Encyclopediae and Textbooks DO NOT SUBMIT THIS FORM: USE THE ANSWER SHEET PROVIDED. SUBMIT ONLY A PDF. Students will complete this assignment individually (i.e. each student must submit their own work and not work copied from a classmate or another source ) in order to understand and apply the appropriate use of tertiary material (e.g. textbooks and encyclopediae) in the context of academic research and writing in a scholarly setting. Answers will be graded as ‘right’/‘wrong’. No part marks will be awarded. Pay attention to detail. The skills we practise here will be used to complete the Research Paper successfully. By completing this assignment, students will learn to recognise and locate tertiary source material and then use these sources to find appropriate material to conduct research at the university undergraduate level. To complete this part of the assignment, we will complete an exercise to gain proficiency in the appropriate use of tertiary sources. Tertiary sources are compilations of primary and/or secondary source material that are useful for shaping a general understanding of a subject and providing a starting point in the research process. Far too often, students mistake the content they find in tertiary sources as the end of their search. Textbooks and other tertiary sources lead us to scholarly material: they do not get used or cited in the final paper. During this assignment, we will master the correct use of some common forms of tertiary sources. Using tertiary source material will be the first step toward conducting the research that will be cited in our final papers (i.e. Research Assignment: Part IV). Students will submit this assignment to demonstrate competency in this critical area. Students must submit their work using the Answer Sheet provided in the format required (i.e. PDF). Submissions that do not meet these criteria will not be graded. The TAs are available for consultation on this assignment up to the day before the due date only. The TAs are not expected to respond to questions about assignments on the day they are due. After the due date, all matters relating to this assignment must be discussed in Office Hours only. Using an Encyclopedia Encyclopdiae are very useful and common tertiary sources. They are a great place to begin our research, but they are not cited as the source of information in our papers. They are the first step in a process not an end in themselves. Use the University of Guelph Library website to access Encyclopedia of Conflict in Ancient Greece and Rome: The Definitive Political, Social, and Military Encyclopedia ( Sara E. Phang, Iain Spence, Douglas Kelly, and Peter Londey, edd.). Locate and r ead the entry under “ Antipater (399/8 319). Now that you have found and read the entry, you have some background information on this interesting 4 th century BCE individual. Remember, the entry itself is NOT what you would use or cite in a research paper. This will be a critically important point to keep in mind when completing your research paper (i.e. Research Assignment: Part IV). Searching so-called tertiary sources is only the first step in the research
process. For other useful general reference works, see the Course Guide for CLAS*1000 maintained on the University of Guelph Library website. We will now use this entry on Antipater to find ancient and secondary source material. Complete the following: 1. It is important to be able to identify the titles of ancient works. What is, according to the author of the encyclopedia entry, the title of the book that notes Antipater had been a friend of Aristotle and probably a follower of the Aristotelian school of philosophy ”? Provide only the title of the book in your answer. Note that best practices demand that titles of books be given in italics . Your answer must follow this practice to be graded as ‘correct’ in this exercise. 2. From the encyclopedia entry, find the names of two ancient authors who cited several of Antipater ’s letters within their own works. Provide only the names of the two ancient authors . If you wanted to write a research paper about Antipater, you would need to find and read these authors (in translation) and cite them as the authority for this claim. 3. What is the name of the battle in which Antipater and the Macedonian forces defeated the Athenian forces? Provide only the name of the battle . 4. What is the name of the general who, alongside Antipater, played a significant role in negotiating a peace settlement between Athens and Macedonia? Provide only the name of the general. 5. Who died at the hands of Antipater following the suspension of Athenian democracy in 322 BCE? Provide only the name of the individual who died . 6. Answer the following question with “yes” or “no . ” Would it be consistent with university -level research practices to cite this encyclopedia entry directly in a research paper? 7. One of the items listed in the “Further Reading” appended to the encyclopedia entry is a book by a modern author . What is the title of the book (i.e. the monograph) listed in the section titled “Further Reading” ? Provide only the title of the book . (Remember that book titles must be given in italics ). 8. One of the items listed in the “Further Reading” appended to the encyclopedia entry is a list of works written by authors from antiquity that contain information about the subject: these are what we call ancient sources. What are the names of the three ancient authors listed in the “Further Reading” ? Provide only the names of the ancient authors as they appear in the list. Another of the items listed in the “Further Reading” is a journal article . To proceed with this assignment, you must first consider each item listed and determine which item is a journal article. Our next step will be to search for, locate, and access the journal article included in the “Further Reading” . Questions 9 and 10 both refer to the journal article listed in the “Further Reading” . 9. What is the title of the journal article listed in the “Further Reading” ? Provide only the title of the journal article . To receive a point for completing this part of the assignment successfully, the title of the journal article must appear in double or single quotation marks. 10. Now that we have identified the journal article in the “Further Reading” , we will prepare a complete and correct bibliography entry for the article. We must pay close attention to detail doing this. Provide a complete and correct Chicago Style (17 th ed.) bibliographic entry for the journal article. Pay close attention to detail here. You must employ the conventions of Chicago Style exactly , including correct punctuation and italics where necessary. Bibliographic precision is a hallmark of scholarly quality. You must format your bibliographic entry precisely, as required. Do
