Toronto Metropolitan University Assignment 4 Language Comparison Essay LNG112 Prof. Marju Toomsalu
Introduction As a Filipino, having gone through those days when others would mock you for your bad English; grammar and pronunciation are the most difficult aspects of the language. Usually, people who speak English as a second language often run through obstacles, but we remain determined to acquire a new language since motivation is still present. English is already widely used for worldwide communication, and it is already taught and learned in many countries throughout the world. English is one of the most widely used languages and has been taught in schools all over the world for many years, particularly in Asia. It is currently the language of choice in every profession that is available worldwide. However, people should not forget their mother tongue and cherish it as their own culture. In this research paper, you will identify the difference between Filipino Language and the English language through the various body language and the contraries in their style of speech. Body Language There are many uses of body language in Filipinos, they open their mouths when they don't grasp a question or raised brows denote acceptance and agreement. As well as, laughing is frequently used to reduce tension and can convey joy or embarrassment. A sudden upward jerk of the head is used to indicate "yes." A downward motion of the head denotes "no." The non-verbal sign for "no" may occasionally be accompanied by a verbal "yes," which would still signify "no," because Filipinos don't often say no. Filipinos may stare or even touch outsiders, especially in areas where foreigners are rarely seen. Staring is considered impolite and may be misconstrued as a challenge. Standing with your hands on your hips conveys anger to Filipinos. To get
someone's attention, lightly touch their elbow, do not tap their shoulders. Eyebrow flashing is a Filipino greeting that involves quickly raising the eyebrows. However, English speakers just have a few body language rules, such as; do not typically show affection in public and do not backslap or touch others. Hugging, kissing, and other physical contact are typically reserved for close relatives and friends. They value their privacy to a certain extent. Avoid approaching someone too closely or putting your arm around their shoulder. Staring is viewed as impolite. They both share the same when it comes to personal space to another person, since this is the generic rule to everyone. Style of Speech (Filipino and English) The syntax can sometimes be ordered differently, it is generally the same. Similar to English, the syntax of the Filipino language might be (SVO), subject (S), verb (V), and object (O), or (VSO). But whereas Filipinos frequently use VSO, English frequently uses SVO. E.g. "I'm using a phone." in English. The order of the English syntax is "I'm" (S), "using" (V), then "phone" (O). "Gumagamit ako ng telepono" in Filipino. The order of the Filipino syntax is “Gumagamit” (V), “ako” (S), “telephono” (O) There's a lot of ergativity in Filipino. English is unquestionably a nominative accusative language, regardless of whether it is a fully ergative language or a split-ergative language, which is a matter of theoretical debate in syntax.
