This course gives you an introduction to semantics and pragmatics. The lecture relies heavily on the textbook. Prereq isites. LINA01 or [FREB44 and FREB45] Excl sion. FREC12, FRE386, LIN241, LIN247, (FFREC49), (FRED49) Learning o tcomes. By the end of the course, you will ideally be familiar with the basic and most essential notions of semantics and pragmatics such as truth con- ditions, compositionality, event semantics, speech acts, implicatures, questions and quantification, etc.; get to know some problematic issues regarding these notions; have seen semantic and pragmatic phenomena in English and French as well as in other languages; know how to apply linquisitc tests. 1
3 Lect res This is an in-person course, with lectures held at the Scarborough campus. Lectures are scheduled on Friday afternoons from noon to 2pm (we start 10 after the hour). The lectures will not be recorded, but the slides will be posted on Quercus in advance. 4 Textbook Paul R. Kroeger (2019). Analyzing Meaning. An introduction to semantics and pragmatics . Third edition. Berlin: Language Science Press. The textbook is available as a pdf for free on the page of the publisher: https://langsci-press.org/catalog/book/359 5 St dent responsibilities You are expected to do the following: Read the relevant chapters for each week, ideally (but necessarily) before the lecture; attend all lectures and complete the quizzes; complete homeworks and write the midterm and the final exam; evaluate the course. 6 Eval ation Your final grade will have the following components: Quizzes 4% each 5 times 20% Homeworks 10% each 2 times 20% Midterm test 20% 1 time 20% Final assessment 40% 1 time 40% Total 100% Quizzes. There will be nine 10-minute quizzes written during lecture time, each one is worth 4%. The five best quizzes will count towards your final mark, this gives a total of 20% of your final grade. The quizzes are meant to check basic understanding of the things discussed in lecture. Homeworks. The aim of homeworks is to make you think about what you have learned from the lecture and what you have read in the book. There are two homeworks, which together give 20% of your final grade. You are allowed and even welcome to work together with someone else from the course, as long as you identify each other. But everyone must submit original work (i.e., you must write up your answers individually). Midterm & final exam. Both the midterm and the final exam will test all the material that has been covered up to that point. The final exam will cover all course material but will put more weight on the second half of the course. More information will be provided once we get closer to each of them. 2
