Describe the subtests (e.g., learning areas) Accoring to Castro-Villarreal and Ponce (2017) “seven subsets that comprise three composite indexes: Contrived Writing, Spontaneous Writing, and Overall Writing” (Castro-Villarreal and Ponce, 2017, para 1) 2. Describe the age range. Ages 9 through 17 3. State the purpose of the instrument. “TOWL-4 is used for determining students’ (ages 9 through 17) writing abilities, screening and identification purposes, progress monitoring of responsiveness to written language instruction and intervention, and for measurement in writing research” (Castro-Villarreal and Ponce, 2017, para 1) 4. Describe the examiner qualifications. The examiner only needs to have formal training in assessments. 5. Describe the available scores. There are “10 scores. Vocabulary, Spelling, Punctuation, Logical Sentences, Sentence Combining, Contextual Conventions, Story Composition, Overall Writing, Spontaneous Writing” (Castro-Villarreal and Ponce, 2017, para 1) 6. Describe the instrument’s technical data provided (i.e., validity, reliability, norms, research). Based on research the TOWL-4 did not have any bias for gender or ethnicity. “Results demonstrated that the TOWL-4 was an accurate predictor of literacy skills” (Castro-Villarreal and Ponce, 2017, para 9). 7. Describe features of the instrument that provide well-designed and easy-to-follow administration procedures. The test provides you with a manual, and if you have training in assessment it is easy to follow. You also are provided a scoring manual, forms, response booklets, and picture cards. 8. State the approximate administration and scoring time. The test takes about 90 minutes to administer and score 9. Describe features of the scoring procedures that are well designed and easy to follow. According to Snow “Scaled scores and percentile ranks are provided for subtests and composites, and scoring parameters for each subtest are provided in the examiner’s manuel” (Snow, 2017 para 2). 10.
