OUTCOMES
Grammar-
Translation
To enable students to
read and translate
written text. To
translate from a
foreign language to
native language.
Subject Vocabulary
words practice
Students can use 5 of
the vocabulary words
and translate then
into their native
language.
This would enable
students to read
and
enable learned
vocabulary.
The Natural
Approach
This method is based
on communication
skills. It teaches a
language by hearing
and communicating
in the language the
student is trying to
learn.
Subject Vocabulary
words practice.
Teacher models how
to say and give
examples of words.
Student have
practice with words
to help with subject
content.
Total
Physical
Response
(TPR)
This method uses
motion and learning
and the initial
learning of a new
language.
Using hand motions
to teach erosion and
weathering
Student prompted to
show hand motion of
erosion and
weathering every
time it is heard in the
lesson
These actions boost
learning of language
and vocabulary.
Language
Experience
Approach
This method has
students to practice
words and concepts
in which they are
familiar. This is an
experience in which
the student has
already had to build
vocabulary
Science-Electricity
lesson
Ask students about
what uses electricity
in their home.
Students can turn
and talk or make a
list of things that
uses electricity in
their home.
This helps student to
practice familiar
words by connecting
with home
experiences.
Cognitive

Language
Learning
Approach
(CALLA)
This
method
provides face to face
conversation. It
teaches ELL’s how to
use learning
strategies for
language and
content.
Integrate academic
language into daily
practice
Word wall integration
This allows students
to use learning
strategies in their
content and
language.
When the teacher understands the levels of linguistic proficiency of an ELL student, they will
be more competent at differentiating instruction to promote academic achievement. After
reading the article on the Stages of Second Language Acquisition, assess the stage of second
language acquisition of an ELL student your classroom.
Describe the stage of language acquisition and explain how you can differentiation instruction to
promote learning.
What teaching and learning strategies would you include in your lessons?
How can this increase student participation? How can this make the student feel more confident?
(Note, if you do not currently have an ELL student, choose a student that may be performing below grade
level and apply this same concept.
(Minimum 250 words)
As the language acquisitions are multiple classroom experiences provided through “student centered” and
“ hands on” curriculum allows the ELL students to learn new content. Differentiation in instruction through
accommodations promote learning.
Accommodations would create learning opportunities that make
allowances for individual students to have equal access to academic content.
Learning strategies in the classroom would include, differentiation, visualizations, technology usage, and
peer help. These strategies are essential for teaching ELL students. Differentiation is important because
each student learns differently, visuals are needed to aid making connections with the language content
taught. Technology is important in any realm. They make software specific for the cause of ELL’s and peer
pairing is important to ELL’s help with modeling language and give the ELL’s a change to practice the
language in a low stress setting. Peers also make the ELL student feel more confident. Having a peer take
away the stress of feeling alone and should be paired with someone based on their academic strength.
Ways to increase participation with ELL students are to ask questions that are based on their personal
experiences, have open discussions in class that are based on current events, or
give the student a “pre-
taught” lesson to prepare them for the class discussion.
