Teaching and Literature Survey. What does the data tell you about how we think
reading should be taught?
As a class we believe that reading should be taught through discussion and
experience. Children need to be taught to love reading. We believe that children are
taught to become and readers and find joy in it, they are not born that way. Careful
instruction goes into developing children into proficient readers and it starts as early
as infancy. “All meanings that are attached to the words that we use are obtained
through experience. Infants begin experiencing the world as soon as they are born”
(Roe & Ross, 2006). That’s why a child’s early literacy stages are fundamental for
creating a strong foundation for children to start building upon.
2.)
Refer to the quotes on vocabulary instruction, respond to: What are the
important ideas about vocabulary instruction highlighted in all three
statements?
All three quotes discuss the importance of vocabulary knowledge for students. What
all three of them seem to focus on is the advantage that having a robust vocabulary
knowledge can have on reading comprehension and how prior vocabulary knowledge
can help students make connections to better understand the text they are reading.
Students can activate their prior knowledge to help them decipher the meaning of the
text. All three quotes highlighted the importance and the connection a robust
vocabulary has on reading comprehension. “Teachers help students learn important
vocabulary words prior to reading difficult or unfamiliar texts. When teaching
vocabulary words, teachers make sure that the selected words are necessary for
making meaning with the text students will be reading and that they help students
connect the new words to something they already know” (Pardo, 2004).
3.)
Which of the six language arts would be challenging to support in the classroom
during a child’s early literacy stage? Explain.
I believe that of the six language arts, visually representing would be the most
challenging language art to support in the classroom. Early literacy sets up the
foundation for children to learn basic skills that they can build upon to become
proficient in literacy. Visually representing is a more advanced language art because it
requires you to organize images, graphs, drawings, and so on, to communicate your
message. “This form of communication requires the student to collect and organize
information, decide on the best way to convey it to others, and produce a visual
product to accomplish this communication,..” (Roe & Ross, 2006). Visually
representing is a language art that is too complex for children to learn during the early
literacy stage.
4.)
Choose one: What can teachers do to develop comprehension?
Teachers can make sure that students have mastered phonemic awareness and really
focus on building their vocabulary. Teachers can help students learn decoding skills
that allow them to quickly pronounce the words. “Teachers help students get to this
level of automatic decoding by providing instruction in phonemic awareness and
phonics at all grade levels” (Pardo,2004). Mastering these early literacy skills will
lead to success in reading proficiency throughout their academic, professional, and
social life.
