EDU 341 Midterm Exam
1. Based on what you have read about the legal mandate in the state of Florida, the Consent
Decree, and program models that are available to the learner, is an ESL “pull out”
program appropriate for second language learners? Why or why not? Explain your answer
in detail with research or evidence from the text to support your discussion.
Based on what I have learned, the ESL pull out program is not appropriate for second language
learners. The Consent Decree talks about equal education for ELLs (English language learners)
and that all students should be tested and placed in the appropriate classroom with trained
educators, depending on the results of the test. I think it would be better for students to have
someone come into the classroom with them instead of being pulled out of class. They could be
missing valuable class time and information when being pulled out of class.
2.
Explain how Mrs. Green should use her training in cultural awareness to deal with
Juan’s classroom behavior.
Mrs. Green should use her training in cultural awareness to deal with Juan’s classroom behavior
by learning more about Juan’s culture. She could use that information to help understand how to
discipline or encourage him while in the classroom. Mrs. Green can also partner Juan with one of
his peers that is bilingual that can help him during lessons. This can also help Juan to interact
with other students and aid his transition to a new place smoother.
3. To identify potential areas of interference the teacher had Juan read a list of words that
commonly display interference from native Spanish speakers as L2 English learners. The
following table displays what Juan said. Based on your learning of English phonetics and
phonology, discuss why Juan is making these errors and at least 2 instructional
interventions can you recommend to help with the development of the sounds of English.
Juan is making these errors because he may not be able to recognize or create a new sound in a
different language. Word and letter sound in Spanish are different from English. Juan may be
saying the words with a sound that he remembers in his native language. He may also have
difficulty with finding the place, location, spot, and mouth organs that are involved in producing
speech sounds (place of articulation). Instructional interventions that I would recommend are to
help the student realize that some letters from both languages make similar sounds, and decoding
words better. Having the student practice finding the sounds in the beginning, middle and end
can help make connections. I also think having words in Spanish and English together may help
the students connect words better.
