When assessing ELLs, teachers must use a variety of assessments in order to get the most
accurate snapshot of academic and language progress. What are some ways teachers can
assess students in the classroom to include all four domains of language (reading, writing,
listening, and speaking)?
As an educator the four domains of language are critical for the complete development of not only the
English language, but any language anyone is learning. For our educators there are many assessments
that are to be taken to prove or back up whether our students are gaining the knowledge of the English
language in our classrooms. There are many ways teachers can access students in their classrooms so
that all language domains are accessible and included. One-way educators may assess EL (English
Learner) proficiency is by allowing students to pair up and develop a conversation in which they use a list
of vocabulary words (Colorín Colorado, 2021). This method would allow teachers to assess the student's
ability to comprehend and use the language in context. After the conversation, the teacher can provide
feedback to the students and assess their understanding of the words and their ability to use them in a
conversation. Another method in the classroom to evaluate students' proficiency is educational games
(Colorín Colorado, 2021). Incorporating games into curriculum-based assessments helps students assess
their ability to think critically, collaborate effectively, communicate, and collaborate with others and their
content knowledge and understanding. Games can be used to assess students in a variety of ways, such
as problem-solving, decision-making, and creative thinking. Moreover, they can provide an engaging and
enjoyable way for students to demonstrate their mastery of a concept. The games can allow students to
build words or sentence fragments, providing background information to figure out letters to spell
certain words, etc. To gain a deeper understanding of their English proficiency level, students use
writing, speaking, reading, and listening skills.

While the assessment of students for program eligibility and language proficiency
generally occurs through formal testing, what are some informal ways you can assess the
learning of ELLs in the classroom? Provide 2-3 examples.
Teachers can use various informal strategies or techniques in the classroom to assess the learning of
English Language Learners (ELLs). Assessments are crucial for educators, especially those who work with
ELLs, and their importance cannot be overstated. Informal assessments enable educators to monitor the
progress of their students continually and develop targeted instruction that caters to the specific needs
of each student to help them achieve their learning goals (Colorín Colorado, 2019). One such informal
assessment technique is the "thumbs up or thumbs down" method, where the teacher could ask the
students to give a thumbs up if they understood the lesson or a thumbs down if they did not (Colorín
Colorado, 2019). This technique can help the teacher evaluate the student's understanding of the lesson
and identify which students require more specific instruction to meet their learning needs. Another
informal assessment technique is to provide reading passages graded at the student's level and ask the
student to read it aloud while the teacher fills out a literacy accuracy and fluency chart (Reading Rockets,
n.d). This data can help the teacher track the student's progress and identify areas that need
improvement. Lastly, after reading a text, the teacher should ask the students questions to ensure that
they have understood what they have read. Students should also be asked to compare their opinions to
those presented in the text (Colorín Colorado, 2019). It is crucial for educators to track their students'
abilities and progress continually, and informal assessments can help them achieve that.
