Assignment 2 Instructions ASSIGNMENT 2 INSTRUCTIONS COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES For STUDENTS (CLOs) Upon completion of this Assignment, students will be able to accomplish the highlighted. CLO 1: Describe dual language learners and sociocultural factors which contribute to the heterogeneity of dual language learners. CLO 2: Explain second language acquisition using relevant second language acquisition theories . CLO 3: C ompare the language acquisition process of simultaneous language learners and sequential bilingual language learners. CLO 4: Analyze the factors contributing to additive bilingual environments or subtractive bilingual environments in the child’s home, community, culture and broader society. CLO 7: Students will be able to apply key terms, concepts, and findings from current and seminal research in second language acquisition in written assignments and in a case study APA paper and speech collection. Instructions for Assignment 2 - Worth 20 points 5 to 7 -page written APA 7 edition format that thoroughly and with accuracy addresses the prompts. 5 to 7 pages of text, not including title page and reference page. Upload Transcript also. Select one theoretical perspective to explain second language acquisition throughout paper. A theoretical perspective is like a lens, through which you examine the child’s language acquisition process. You may select any but be able to cite sources for your theory. Chomsky’s Nativist theory; Piaget’s Developmental Theory; Vygotsky’s Socio-Cultural Theory; Bronfenbrenner’s Bio-ecological Theory. You must also explain and apply Cummin’s Interdependence Hypothesis to analyze and explain Simultaneous/Sequential language acquisition Discuss and Utilize findings from 3 to 5 Research articles and resources to support discussion and description of terms and concepts. Students may use articles posted in CANVAS Course 4930. Utilize the Case Study Child Speech Collection to illustrate Key Concepts and apply key concepts. Students who completed Assignment 1 with a partner may work with that partner on Assignment 2. Each member of the partner-team must upload their own copy of the required assignment materials. Sections of the paper: Introduction: Define and Describe the topic of the paper: Sequential Bilingual Language Acquisition and Simultaneous Bilingual Language Acquisition. Describe the heterogenous population of English Learners in California or in the United States.
Assignment 2 Instructions Theoretical perspective – State the theory and be sure to define important concepts of the theory you have chosen to explain simultaneous/sequential language acquisition. Use this theoretical perspective to support your analysis and statements throughout the paper. Theories important in this course that explain Simultaneous or Sequential language Acquisition: Cummins Interdependence Hypothesis Module 2 – 8) ; Krashen’s Language Acquisition Hypothesis (Module 6 and 7); Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Theory (Modules 10, 11 and 12), Critical Race Theory (Module 11 and 12) Compare and Contrast Simultaneous and Sequential Language Acquisition. This section is your main section. Explain key concepts and terminology of Sequential and of Simultaneous language acquisition. o What does the research say about Simultaneous language acquisition and Sequential Language Acquisition and about any key concept (cite sources). o What key concepts are important in explaining Sequential or Simultaneous language acquisition? How do they occur the same in or different in Simultaneous or Sequential children. Give examples. You may give your own examples of the concepts, or use the research articles to give examples or integrate examples from the child’s transcript of terminology. o What does your selected theory say about Simultaneous and Sequential acquisition and any concepts ? Describe and analyze the case study child. Introduce the child . Identify whether he/she is a Simultaneous or a Sequential Learner and justify why you have decided to categorize him/her as either category.…provide evidence from the transcript; o Use the theory and research to explain the child’s language acquisition o Students must analyze the child’s level of bilingual development and ability for each language by applying appropriate terms (such as Stage of Language Acquisition, passive bilingualism, BICS or CALP, proficiency in the 4 domains of language, etc) to the child’s speech. o Integrate examples from the transcript of the speech collection to demonstrate the terminology and the child’s progress in language acquisition. o Cite utterances; For example, if you make a statement like “the child appears to be experiencing attrition”, then you must use research and the utterances to demonstrate or describe Attrition.
