If content area standards are provided for every grade level, why are English language
proficiency standards necessary? How do you plan to use ELP standards as a teacher? How
would you explain what they are and why you use them to an ELL parent?
ELLs' language proficiency in English as a second language (EL) will determine the
language they need to acquire and grasp material both within and outside of the
classroom. The ELP standards, in accordance with Segota (2016), are not independent;
rather, they serve as a link to the subject-matter standards required of all students in
American schools. ELLs' academic performance across the curriculum and English
language proficiency (ELP) must both increase for them to fully and actively participate
in school. Academic achievement requires both the academic language skills required
to access disciplines like English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies
as well as the social and intercultural language proficiency of using English in the
classroom.
Standards outline the
language and subject matter that ELLs should be able to grasp. ELP laws and
professional teaching standards for English as a second language (ESL) instructors are
both essential for ELLs to achieve academically in US schools. As a teacher, I want to
use ELP standards to assist students understand the material, enhance their academic
English, and encourage them to adopt good learning habits. I'll also utilize visuals,
manipulatives, graphic organizers, notes, and other resources I'll provide. I'll use
exercises and questions that demand different levels of thinking as a further strategy.
I would explain to
parents how ELL standards are developed to address the important requirement for
educational fairness, access, and rigor for adult English language learners (ELLs). Adult
ELLs must meet the state's academic content criteria to be ready for college and the
workforce. Families should be aware that parents are thought to be experts on their
kids' linguistic development and learning. The cornerstone of language-focused family
participation is interacting with families to find out about their children's language use
and development.
