TSL4100 Chapter One: Who are English Language Learners? Guided Reading Questions 1. What kinds of diversity do we find within the category “English language learners”? According to the text, English language learners are extremely diverse. The text gives examples of many different English language learners that are different ages, genders, ethnicities, birthplaces, and languages. Not only are they of diverse backgrounds but most importantly they have diverse levels of fluency in the English Language. This can be a challenge for teachers because we must adjust our lessons to meet all of their diverse needs. 2. What are the pros and cons of different labels for English language learners The positive aspect of labeling English language learners is that it helps the teacher identify the students’ needs and give them the support that they need. The negative aspect would be when the school views the students lack of English skills as a problem that they are unable to overcome and devalues that student’s culture and background. Teachers must have a pluralistic perspective for ELL student to succeed. 3. Where do we find English language learners in the United States, in the past and today? According to the text and the 2016 census ELL students are mainly in California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, Washington, Colorado, Virginia, Georgia, and North Carolina. 4. Why do teachers need to now specific information about their English language learners’ home languages and literacies, English language proficiency, educational histories, and sociocultural experiences? All these factors give teachers a better understanding of where the student is educationally. The more the teacher knows about the student the better they can prepare for them and have resource available to them. The text talks about how successful ELL teachers use pluralistic teaching strategies when teaching ELL students. Knowing all of these factors help the teacher have a pluralistic education plan for the students. 5. How can teachers learn about their English language learners’ background? According to the text, this information can be obtained in their academic file. In this file there should be a copy of the home language survey that contains the language spoken at home and records of previous ELP scores. I think it is important to begin a relationship with the students as well. Asking students questions about themselves will help the teacher know more about them and also the student will feel more comfortable with the teacher because it shows that the teacher has an interest in them.
TSL4100 Chapter One: Who are English Language Learners? Guided Reading Questions 6. Think about what you read and identify three (3) ways to create a supportive and accepting classroom environment. This list can be a bulleted list – but explain what it is that the bullet means or how it creates this environment if it is not self-explanatory. Knowing the student’s culture. This will help the student assimilate into the new environment and help them feel included in a world that is so different from theirs. It is important not to use stereotypes and generalizations when it comes to each student’s culture. Ensure that these students do not fall through the cracks of the educational system. According to the text, many ELL students that are lower income are not as successful as those in the higher income. As a teacher we need to advocate for all students and ensure they understand what is happening in class and are getting the services they need to succeed. Promoting additive bilingualism. I intend to teach the students English but encourage them to continue learning and speaking their native language. I will tell them the importance of being able to speak two languages.
