: Figurative language is an abstract and complex way of communicating that can be difficult to understand. There is a variety of research to gain insight into the process in which individuals learn and comprehend figurative language. One type of figurative language is a metaphor, which Pence Turnbull and Justice (2017) define as “conveys similarity between two ideas or objects by stating that those two ideas or objects are the same.” In the “Learn more about 8.6” video posted by Murza (2020), a researcher measures a school aged child’s understanding of metaphors. She begins reading passages that contain metaphors to the

participant and pauses to ask, “what does that mean?” The participant either states “I don’t know,” states a correct answer, or states an incorrect answer. The participant in the video gave all three answers, showing that she does not have full comprehension of metaphor usage. Pence Turnbull and Justice (2017) suggest that individuals need a strong understanding of the concepts used in metaphors, to fully comprehend the given metaphor. As children’s vocabulary increases and their experiences with figurative speech, their ability to analyze language (metalinguistic competence) will also increase. Using metaphors and other figurative language is an important developmental milestone and research is instrumental in understanding this process. References
